Ask the Editors: Modern Quad with Banshee-like Suspension

Dear ATVC: While I was at the dunes I rode a friend’s Kawasaki KFX450R and an other friend’s Banshee. The Banshee’s suspension (which is stock) was way smoother than the KFX. I was thinking of getting a Banshee but I really want a four stroke. So my question is what are some 4 stroke quads with suspension as good as a Banshee’s that won’t rape my wallet? Captain Eggo

Yours is a very interesting question because believe it or not, the Yamaha Banshee’s suspension platform, which was fairly run-of-the-mill when introduced back in 1987, is extremely antiquated in comparison to most of the modern four-stroke offerings available (including the KFX450R you test rode).

Why then would the Banshee feel smoother/ more plush in action? Settings. Early oil damped shocks that were standard in the 1980s were only preload adjustable (meaning the sag could be changed by selecting from pre-notched clickers on the external coil-over spring). Modern suspension like that of the Kawasaki offer compression, rebound and spring preload adjustability.

In short, you would have the ability to fine tune the KFX’s suspension to your weight/ conditions & riding style far more effectively than you would the Banshee. Sounds to us like your friend was simply running his stiff to handle jump landings rather than to absorb small trail clutter.

That being said, if you are still looking for relatively less-complex suspension like the Banshee but insist on a 4-stroke, check into the (first generation) Yamaha Raptor 660R, Bombardier DS650, and the Honda 400EX.
