undefined    Having the correct amount of Demand-Drive-Oil in the hubs of Polaris 4×4’s is critical in ensuring the internal parts of the hub are properly lubricated and working efficiently. In order to check the amount of fluid in the hubs you must do the following:

*Find the fill check plug on the side of the hub, and back it out using an Allen wrench

*Rotate the hub until the plug is either at the 4:00 or 8:00 position

*If fluid comes out of the hole, there is enough fluid inside, so you reinstall the plug

*If fluid doesn’t come out, you add more* until it trickles out

*(*-Polaris recommends using Polaris-Demand-Drive Oil or Type “F” automatic transmission fluid)

*Finally, reinstall the plug

Installation

undefined    Installing the 4Play Locker hubcap isn’t difficult and noin-depth mechanical ability or special tools are needed.    The first thing you need to do is remove the stock plastic hubcap. (Note: If the cap is removed with fluid in hub (which there should be), the fluid will run out.   Be sure to have a friend help you carefully prop the machine up on its side to prevent spilling or have rags and a catch pan ready to clean up the mess.) To remove the stock hub cap, just back out the three torx screws that hold it in place; we were able to use a small flat head screwdriver to remove them. Carefully use a larger flat head screwdriver to evenly pry the hubcap out of place. Make sure you don’t damage the O-rings if you plan to reuse them when installing the new caps.

To install the 4Play Locker hub caps, place the O-ring from the stock cap in the groove on the new one, then carefully align the cap so that the three bolt holes line up with the holes on the hub. Once lined up, push the cap into place. Be careful not to pinch or damage the O-ring. Finally, reinstall the three screws that were used to hold the stock cap in place. Reinstalling the screws should have been the easiest step–but we noticed that the three holes on the 4Play cover didn’t line up correctly.

undefined4Play Locker informed us that they had sent a prototype model, and this was the reason they didn’t fit right. We were told to drill all the holes one size bigger for the covers to fit. According to 4Play Locker, the units currently available will fit without modification. However, we haven’t had a chance to try the new production set to confirm this.
Although 4Play Locker claims you can use the same O-ring that is used with the stock caps, if you have any doubts of the condition of the O-ring, replace it! They are inexpensive—much less costly than replacing damaged parts in the hub due to mud and water getting in or the lubrication leaking out. Considering the price of O-rings and the importance of a leak-free fit, maybe new rings could be included with the kit?

Summary

undefinedBesides the fact that the caps required drilling to make them fit, our only real complaint is that there are no markings on the sight glass to show when the hub is running low on fluid. We filled the hubs to the proper level as described in the Owner’s Manual and made a mental note on the fluid level in the sight glass for future reference. We found the 4Play Locker hubcaps to be stronger than the stock plastic pieces, but they stick out slightly farther than the stock caps. However, it shouldn’t be a problem for most people.

4Play Locker claims that the hubcaps will work with any Polaris 4×4, but by looking over the design we aren’t sure if they will work with the older model Polaris machines that utilize push-in hubcaps instead of current ones that are held in with screws. If you have an older style Polaris 4×4, verify your model and year machine with 4Play Locker before ordering.

undefinedThe new billet hubcaps from 4Play Locker are not only convenient, but also add a trick look to your ATV if you are running chrome or aluminum wheels. If the production units truly don’t require modification to make them fit, they will be a great addition to your Polaris 4×4.
