Ask the Editors: Can I Mix & Match Pipes and Mufflers?

Dear ATVC: So I have a 06 Kawasaki KFX400 and I was thinking of buying a Megabomb header from FMF. I tried searching for if mating the two would be possible but nothing came up. I wanted to see if I could put a Megabomb header on my wheeler with my RS-2 slip on. HunnerBunnerGo

Good news- since the junction of the header pipe and the slip on both follow stock dimensions, mating the two together should prove quite possible physically.

The trouble is we can’t be positive mixing the two will yield performance gains. Often times the effect of one brand’s header can counteract the gains of another’s muffler and vise versa.

Do keep in mind that when a company designs an entire exhaust, they have control of the relationship between head pipe and muffler and can thus promise performance gains by running the complete system. Additionally, adding a slip on to a stock pipe is also well within each brand’s performance testing criteria. Things can get dicey when you begin combining bits from their competition. In fact there are a lot of cases out there where playing mix & match has resulted in loss of performance.
Megabomb
Strangely enough, looking through various forums, riders do report fantastic gains of the FMF Megabomb with the Yosh RS-2 on the 2008 Yamaha WR450F (motorcycle) but we couldn’t find the results of such a mating for the Kawasaki KFX400/ Suzuki LTZ400.

Before sinking our coin on the header, we would probably post the question around forums dedicated to the Kawasaki KFX400/ Suzuki LTZ400/ Arctic Cat DVX400 (as they are all the same machine). Your particular machine has one of the largest user bases on the web.
