Ask The Editors: Is Dry Gas Pointless?

Bottles

Dear ATVC: My buddy insists dry gas is no longer needed with modern gasoline. If that’s true, why would they still sell it in stores?

Believe it or not, your buddy is partially correct. Why only partially? Because it depends upon where you live. Dry gas is, after all, an alcohol additive. If you happen to be in an area that’s pushing ethanol-enriched gasoline (here in NY they force 10% ethanol blend upon us), we are essentially getting a full gallon of dry gas for every 10-gallons of fuel we pump.

While it can be argued that genuine dry gas sometimes contains other similar alcohols like methanol and isopropyl, the fact remains that what any alcohol in your fuel is doing is absorbing water from the gasoline and keeping it in solution form so that it can be burned in the combustion chamber.

The reason individual bottles are still sold is that ethanol/ gasoline blends are not mandatory in all areas (yet). Additionally some people don’t realize that an ethanol blend is already accomplishing the same outcome.

The bad news is studies prove time and time again that so great a concentration of ethanol (some areas are actually selling 15% blends) are hazardous to small engines. Many companies offer enzyme additives to counteract the negative effects of so much alcohol in our fuel. In keeping with the theme, would such additives be considered “wet gas”?
