Dear ATVC: I bought a 2002 Honda TRX400EX with a 440 kit installed. It has the stock exhaust and I’m looking to get a new one to get more power out of it but don’t want the exhaust to cost a arm and a leg. Any suggestions? Rogera36

While you didn’t give us an exact budget to work with, we have some good news in that the Honda 400EX has had a remarkable run (from 1999 and still going)- which means just about every company who has ever offered a pipe has made one for your machine.

Depending on how much you actually want to spend, you have the option of purchasing a full exhaust system (from the head right back to the muffler) or a slip-on muffler for considerably less. While it’s true a full system will give you the most noticeable gains in power, keep in mind that running a slip-on until you save up for the header pipe is a good way to split the difference while still gaining some performance and bark in the process.

That said when it comes to 4-stroke performance exhausts on a budget, DG is always a good place to start your search. We located their R-Series Slip-On brand new for $109 online and the header for $159 on eBay. $268 for a complete aftermarket exhaust is probably about the most affordable you’re going to find.

Muzzy’s sells a complete racing exhaust system for the 400EX that we found for $498.95. Yoshimura will sell you their RS-2 complete exhaust for around the same.

After that you can pretty much count on most of the major exhaust brands (FMF, HMF, Big Gun, Pro Circuit, DMC, LSR, Two Brothers etc.) do offer slip-on mufflers for roughly between $250- $300 for your make/ model.
