Dear ATVC: I plan on pushing my ATV pretty hard this summer out in the desert for a local points rally series. Do you know of any products that effectively reduce engine heat without costing horsepower? Bajavier

You’re in luck as not only do products like the Boyesen Supercooler drop your engine’s operating temp by 10-degrees, they actually gain you valuable horsepower in the process. Best of all, they make use of the stock radiator so that you aren’t mired in having to replace components that are, for all intents and purposes, functioning fine.

What the Supercooler kit consists of then is a higher flow water pump cover and larger impeller; the idea here being that a greater volume of coolant being cycled more frequently will be better at dissipating engine heat. As a result not only does the motor run cooler but at a more consistent operating temperature as well. Of course this can work in addition to going with a larger radiator as well; which also adds more coolant to the equation and even better heat dissipation.

If a larger radiator and more powerful water pump still isn’t enough for the temperature drops you seek, you also have the option of adding an oil cooler; which, as the name suggests, adds a second radiator and hose kit to flow the engine oil itself out for cooling before returning it back for lubrication duty.

As an added bonus, these kits increase your engine’s oil capacity in the process (as it takes more to keep the circulation system full) and not only extend the life of the engine as a result but the life of the oil as well. Best of all, they can be run in conjunction with kits like the above Supercooler to double the cooling potential.
