Sneak Peak: KTM AX

The collective ATV industry certainly benefited by Austrian cycle-maker, KTM’s decision to begin producing performance oriented quads a few years back. The news came amidst a virtual industry-expansion revolution for the relatively small firm who suddenly decided to venture into such arenas as the automotive scene (with the X-Bow) on down to the pedal powered bicycle market with a line of mountain bikes.
Now it appears the company is at it again, this time with another off-road vehicle that, like the ATV counterparts, sits on four wheels. Only this time internal combustion power would no longer be charged with the task of getting things hopping. Powered by a gas/ electric hybrid, this concept vehicle, known as the Ax, would benefit from four individually steerable electric engines (mounted at the wheels).
The frame of the KTM Ax appears to crafted of lightweight aluminum spars; a first for the brand that has made it a point of sticking with proven steel on their current line.
Apparently designed to accommodate both a driver and passenger, the KTM Ax was reportedly developed by students from FH Joanneum University in collaboration with KTM. Plans to bring the unit into production have not yet been finalized but we’re certain off-roaders all around the globe are keeping their fingers crossed with optimism.
