Tanner Godfrey Puts UTV into the Guiness Book

March 25th, 2013 by Jason Giacchino

Sure there have been no shortage of individuals who have gotten into the record books via motorized vehicles throughout the years but when it comes to the side-by-side, there are many opportunities yet available.

Take for example Tanner Godfrey who had decided to jump his Arctic Cat Wildcat to a new world record. Godfrey was paralyzed from the sternum down in a 2007 moto accident and had worked long and hard to regain some semblance of mobility.

Godfrey managed to maintain a positive attitude and tenacious spirit through it all. As he once said, “Don’t ever let people tell you what you can or can’t do. Just live life. Don’t let things slow you down. You have to be tough to be successful.”

Not only is he now able to walk short distances with a cane, he has fashioned hand controls for his Wildcat so he can still rip around in the dirt.

Adding to the plot, Godfrey decided to attempt his jump near the site of his life-changing accident in Mesquite, Nevada. It would take place during the Mesquite Off-Road Weekend event at the Eureka Casino Resort, featuring a show by the wild and crazy crew from Nitro Circus.

Not coincidentally, Tanner Godfrey is the nephew of Nitro Circus creator Gregg Godfrey. This jump would also raise funds and awareness for the Wounded Warriors Project.

With about 2,000 revved-up spectators looking on, Tanner climbed into his Edge Powersports-backed, STI-equipped Wildcat (with 30-inch Roctane tires on 14-inch HD Beadlock wheels) and confidently shattered the former distance mark (47 feet).

Godfrey launched 105 feet through the dry night sky to easily claim an officially documented Guinness World Record. Then he turned around and did it again.

UTV enthusiasts have cause for celebration with an announcement coming out of the Arctic Cat camp that promises to offer more options for performance fans looking to carry more than a single passenger.

The Wildcat 4 1000 answers the call for pure-sport ROV enthusiasts who want to carry 2 or more passengers. The Wildcat 4 is purpose built with many of the industry-leading key features found in the Wildcat 1000, but Arctic Cat engineers have gone beyond “industry-leading”.

A completely new drive and driven clutch was designed in partnership with the leading clutch authority, Team Industries. The new clutching system provides improved acceleration while putting the massive torque and horsepower of the 1000 engine to the ground where it matters. In addition, a new sway bar has been designed to work harmoniously with the all-new PODIUM FOX SHOX, creating an unrivalled operator and passenger experience.

All-New Can-Am Outlander 650 Targets Mudders

September 25th, 2012 by Jason Giacchino

Can-Am absolutely refuses to let a still-recovering economy slow them down and nowhere is this fact clearer than in this, news of their latest Outlander. Combining the charms of the big 1000 X mr and the Outlander 650, Can-Am has mudders in mind with this one.

The all-new Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr is the newest hero ATV for mud-riding enthusiasts, fusing proven design elements from the Outlander 650, the award-winning 1000 X mr and some specialty components of its own. The Outlander 650 X mr, which features a 51-inch wheelbase and Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 frame and chassis, will attract plenty of attention with a more compact design, mud-specific engineering and overall skill set.

Using principles of design we call Geometric Contact Control, BRP engineers designed the Surround Spar Technology chassis to be able to deliver the hardcore performance the Can-Am brand is known for, yet enhance the overall comfort of the vehicle at all levels of riding. Diehard mud-riding enthusiasts can go straight from the showroom to frolicking at mud-riding parks and tackling trails with confidence. The addition of Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) and Visco-Lok QE adds another level of superiority.

The robust 62-HP 650cc Rotax V-Twin engine provides generous power for clawing through murky mud pits or throttling down a trail. A larger radiator sits in place of a front rack, so it’s as high on the ATV as possible and out of the mud and water for optimal temperature control. The CVT intake, CVT exhaust and engine air intake are also located as high as possible in the machine (in a snorkel-like setup) to keep mud and water out of important components to ensure the X mr keeps churning even in the worst conditions. New 28-inch Maxxis mud-specific tires, on 12-inch cast-aluminum wheels, feature an aggressive tread design for superior traction. The Outlander 650 X mr is completed with X-package graphics, aluminum foot pegs, and preload-adjustable mud shocks.

The 650 X mr is every bit as tough and polished as the big-bore 1000 X mr, but its ability to seamlessly cross over from the mud to the trails adds to its versatility and makes it a whole new breed in the industry.

Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr Features and Benefits

PERFORMANCE

62-HP Rotax V-Twin 650
Revised for 2013, the 650cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-Twin powerplant now produces 62 horsepower and can easily outperform competitive 700cc-class models. With an unmatched power-to-weight ratio and electronic fuel injection (46mm throttle body), the single overhead cam engine is efficient, imposing and invigorating. Regardless of temperature or altitude, EFI ensures optimal performance from the engine at all times.

The Rotax engine remains controllable and offers useable power for a wide array of riders and situations. Progressive throttle control means the power remains manageable in slow-speed mud crawls or in faster paced trail runs.

Dual-room, No-tools Air Box
The Outlander 650 air box is placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. The no-tools air box features a dual-room design that improves the air filtration process and the quality of air by capturing dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. The air intake is also higher in the frame to improve the machine’s capabilities in the mud and water. Accessing the filter for maintenance and inspection only requires the removal of the seat, console plastic and exterior push plate. The air filter is securely attached to the air box housing with a screw-on system and push plate that work in tandem to create a tight seal.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with engine braking
BRP has made sure that critical components like the CVT intake, CVT exhaust and engine intake are located as high as possible on the ATV. They are placed high in front of the handlebars and above the muddy, wet conditions below. The CVT cover features a secure 13-bolt system for an improved seal. The cover has an easily accessible drain plug if the need ever arises to remove water from the CVT housing. Automatic transmission with standard engine braking featuring high, low, park, neutral and reverse is also included.

Large, Relocated Radiator
Located in place of the front rack, the Can-Am Outlander X mr’s radiator is kept out of the mud and wears a protective, vented cover, ensuring all-day rides in the deep goop. The large, efficient radiator offers around 22 kW of cooling capacity.

Large 5.4 gal (20.5 L) fuel tank
The Outlander has a capacity of 5.4 gallons (20.5 liters), which means one can ride longer and play harder.

HANDLING

Surrounding Spar Technology (SST G2) frame with Geometric Contact Control
The Outlander 650 X mr uses the next generation and industry-exclusive Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 frame from BRP. Introduced in 2012 on the 800R and 1000 models, the welded-steel frame incorporated new processes and updated geometry for increased structural integrity, improved durability and precision handling. The more efficient SST design offers increased strength compared to a traditional tubular steel chassis, a lower center of gravity, better handling and requires far less components, materials and welds.

Double A-arm Front Suspension with Dive-control Geometry
The front suspension features a dive-control and anti-kickback geometry that positions the pivot points in space instead of simply adding stiffer shocks and springs. The geometry also inspires confidence-reducing kickback to the operator by locating the knuckle in the wheel. The 2013 650 X mr ATV uses five-way preload adjustable, mud-specific shocks that supply comfort both in the bog and on the trail. Front-end suspension travel is 9.0 inches (22.9 cm).

Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension
Unique to Can-Am and inspired by trophy trucks, the proven Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension offers increased rigidity, improved suspension travel at 9.3 inches (23.6 cm) and includes a removable external sway bar. The TTI, which offers up to 75 percent less moving parts than competitive systems, was designed to eliminate tire scrub and camber changes when the suspension moves up and down. This setup, which improves ride quality and suspension travel, keeps the ATV in a straight line and requires less steering adjustments than competitive models. Lower pivot points provide geometric squatting for improved traction and the transfer of power to the ground.

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)
The Dynamic Power Steering system on the Outlander 650 X mr has three separate selectable levels of steering assistance: Minimum, Medium or Maximum. DPS provides variable steering assistance no matter what mode is selected and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag. Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS will never fade with heavy use and all DPS-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok QE.

Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential
The industry exclusive Visco-Lok QE progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one – automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. The system also eliminates wheel hop and driveline wind-up so it remains transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Visco-Lok QE can fully lock with no rev or speed limiter. All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential, which remains for vital for slow-speed, technical terrain.

214-mm ventilated disc brakes with hydraulic twin-piston calipers
The 2013 Outlander 650 X mr features outboard hydraulic disc brakes. The front setup uses large 214mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers for superior stopping power. At the rear, the 650 Xmr uses a single twin-piston caliper and 214mm hydraulic disc brake that is located in the right, rear wheel. Braking is controlled by a single hand brake (controls front and rear) on the left side of the handlebars and a rear foot brake in the right floorboard (controls rear only).

12-in. (30.5cm) cast-aluminum wheels with machined finish
The center-less design reduces unsprung weight and offers improved strength. Durability was increased in strategic areas while excess material was eliminated in other spots to save weight.

28-inch (71cm) Maxxis Mudzilla Tires
The 28-in. Maxxis Mudzilla 6-ply tires were selected for their exceptional mud-friendly characteristics. Large lugs and an aggressive tread pattern are design to give a maximum traction in the mud and a smooth ride to the next mud hole. Tire offers rim guard for improved wheel protection.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

Stylish Design
The 2013 Outlander 650 X mr ATV mimics the larger Outlander 1000 and 800R models with its cutting-edge styling and aggressive and muscular sightlines. Specialty graphics and X package color scheme help the 650 X mr stand out in a crowd.

High-strength, multip urpose rear rack with LinQ quick-attach accessory system
The high-strength, reinforced composite rear rack has an integrated anti-skid surface and elevated ridges for improved cargo holding (rated at 200 pounds). Predetermined “cutouts” add versatility and are for use with Can-Am’s exclusive LinQ quick-attach accessory system, which is adaptable and customizable for various uses and products.

5.7-gal (21.4L) rear storage compartment
Just because it’s made to perform in the mud, doesn’t mean the Outlander 650 X mr ATV isn’t versatile. A huge 5.7-gallon (21.4-liter) rear storage box offers industry-leading cargo capacity and is located beneath the rear cargo rack. This means you can place items in the water-resistant storage box even if the rear cargo rack is loaded.

Front Bumper
A large bumper protects the front plastic and lights of the Outlander 650 X mr and offers a more distinct look over stock. 1,300-lb (590 kg) towing capacity The Outlander offers a 1,300-pound towing capacity and a 2-inch receiver hitch as standard equipment.

Can-Am Maverick 1000R Family Features and Benefits

101-hp Rotax 1000R V-Twin engine

The new 976cc, 101-hp Rotax 1000R V-Twin engine is the most powerful side-by-side engine in the industry. This liquid cooled, single-overhead-cam power plant features four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 54mm Bosch throttle body and two VDO Seimens fuel injectors. The sophisticated electronic fuel injection system automatically keeps the engine’s performance at its peak, regardless of temperature or altitude. Dual exhausts ensure that distinctive sound you’d expect from a high-performance side-by-side vehicle. The end result is a high-performance side-by-side vehicle capable of producing the most power, acceleration and best power-to-weight while at the same time maintaining excellent fuel efficiency.

High-flow Dynamics
When an engine breathes easier, it can produce more horsepower. So we optimized air intake, combustion and exhaust flow to improve engine efficiency. The result is the 101-hp Rotax 1000R. This was achieved in conjunction with increasing the flow volume of the intake plenum and independent intake runners that allow the tuning of each cylinder for optimal performance. A high-flow head to optimize the combustion chamber, thanks to larger intake and exhaust valves and an increased compression ratio (12.0:1), and high-flow dual exhaust all contribute to the more-powerful and efficient engine.

Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC)
The electronic throttle-by-wire iTC system offers a smooth throttle delivery even if the driver’s foot is bouncing due to the rough terrain. The iTC system — which features a rider selectable twin-mode toggle switch for throttle control— can detect unwanted bounces and then filter the input, resulting in more throttle accuracy, especially at low speed. Drivers can choose between a progressive mode (standard) and a Sport mode, which offers linear throttle control. This system also reduces the number of moving parts in the vehicle; requires no maintenance; has no cables to adjust, lubricate, or replace; and the system has an increased life span.

Dual Exhaust
The dual exhausts uses tuned manifold lengths and resonator chamber to create more flow, optimizing performance and sound. Industry first catalytic converter and closed-loop system ensure optimal combustion from an emission standpoint, meeting new EPA/ CARB standards for 2014 models.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) & Zylon-reinforced belt
The updated CVT system showcases a new belt reinforced with Zylon, a material with 1.6 times higher tensile strength and with increased belt rigidity in compression compared to a regular belt, keeping it cooler. A dual CVT exhaust design also ensures cooler belt temperatures, even in extreme conditions. A redesigned drive pulley with increased diameter will provide extra durability. Standard with engine braking to help slow you when going downhill.

10-gallon (37.8 L) fuel tank
The Maverick has the largest fuel tank of sport side-by-side at 10 gallons (38 liters). That’s 14% more than its nearest competitor in the segment, providing extended range while exploring the outdoors.

Double A-arm front suspension

The double A-arm front suspension front suspension features 14 in.(356mm) of travel for a capable and precise ride.

Torsional Trailing A-Arms (TTA ) independent rear suspension

The innovative TTA rear suspension on the Maverick 1000R is engineered to be compact, lightweight, efficient and deliver the performance sport enthusiasts demand. This is a compact version of a five-link suspension for no bump steer and the lowest scrub for optimized bump absorption and tire-to-ground contact. It also has less rear unsprung weight than other sport side-by-sides. The system features a double A-arm setup where each A-arm acts as two links and uses a toe-control link as the fifth link. The result is a more condensed and lighter package with less pivot points and spherical ball joints making it more durable because it reduces free play and wear, and is more resistant to undercarriage damage. Engineers designed the TTA to allow for optimal geometric weight transfer to enhance the tire-to-ground contact, while at the same time increasing its bump absorption, traction and, ultimately, overall control of the suspension. Offers 14-inches (356mm) of travel.

FOX Podium X Performance 2.0 piggyback shocks
The Can-Am Maverick features front and rear FOX Podium X Performance 2.0 HPG piggyback shocks with compression and preload adjustments so you can setup the ride to whatever playgrounds you choose to tackle. Re-buildable design allows for easy service and valving changes. This shock features dual-rate spring, high-volume 6-inch (152mm) piggyback reservoir, velocity sensitive damping control, hard-anodized aluminum body, forged piggyback body cap, hard-chrome plated heat-treated shaft, upper and lower bearing mounts, racing-developed high-flow piston and specially formulated oil for optimal performance at variable temperatures.

Mid-engine layout
The Rotax power plant sits low and close to the center of the wheelbase, which not only improves the Maverick side by side’s weight distribution and mass centralization, but also means it’s quicker to react to direction changes. The mid-engine configuration results in a low center of gravity and, along with the rest of the chassis components, improves handling while cornering. Add in a 84.3-inch (214cm) wheelbase and 64-inch (163cm) width, and the result is a nimble Maverick that is as predictable and confidence inspiring as it is powerful and dynamic.

High frame rigidity
The Maverick 1000R is outfitted with a new frame that’s offers more engineered rigidity compared to its closest competition. With more torsional rigidity, a frame can improve handling by allowing the vehicle’s suspension to work properly and with increased precision.

13 in. (33cm) of ground clearance
The Maverick has 13 inches (33cm) of total ground clearance for optimum performance in challenging terrain. The suspension and frame were engineered to produce a vehicle that can tackle rugged terrain in predictable fashion while also remaining precise in aggressive cornering.

Front and rear dual 214-mm ventilated disc brakes
The four-wheel disc braking system on the Maverick 1000R consists of front 214mm hydraulic disc brakes with twin-piston caliper and 214mm rear hydraulic disc with a single-piston caliper for great stopping power.

12-inch Center-less Cast-aluminum Wheels

This stylish center-less cast-aluminum wheels were computer-optimized to add strength and durability in strategic areas while eliminating excess material in other spots to reduce unsprung weight.

27-inch (60.6cm) Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 Tires

This tire provides a smooth ride, predictable feel over a variety of surfaces while at the same time offering sturdy lugs and a capable tread pattern to let you drive with confidence.

Visco-Lok Front Differential
Exclusive to Can-Am, Visco-Lok is a progressively and automatically locking front differential system, once 4×4 mode is selected. The system intelligently transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction. Visco-Lok has no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel hop or driveline wind-up so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Visco-Lok gives progressive lock-up with no rev or speed limiter.

Driver and passenger advanced ergonomics
The Can-Am Maverick 1000R features a spacious cockpit specifically designed to cater to the needs of drivers of various sizes and do so with a fit-and-finish that leads the industry. Designed to provide easier ingress / egress, more cockpit space and legroom, for optimal comfort when riding. Driver-focused ergonomics means adjustable comfort, easy-to-reach controls, integrated safety features and unmatched versatility. A side-by-side also needs to create a similar experience for the passenger by creating a space that makes them feel one with the vehicle.

Removable free-standing seats
The seats in the Maverick are removable and freestanding, which means you and your passenger can feel as comfortable in them at the campfire at the end of a long day as you have during your trail journey. The seats are designed to offer both lumbar and lateral support, providing comfort even in the roughest of terrain.

Throw in dynamic racing-inspired graphics, lightweight 12-inch (30.5cm) aluminum beadlock wheels and other specialty add-ons and the 1000R X rs is as pleasing on the eye as it is on the trail.

FOX Podium X Performance RC2.5 piggyback shocks

Developed in collaboration with FOX, the high-grade FOX shocks make their first appearance on a factory-built side-by-side vehicle. The re-buildable shocks sit at all four corners and are fully adjustable for Dual-Speed Compression and rebound. The 2.5 Podium shocks offer a high-volume 6-inch piggyback oil reservoir and specially formulated oil for improved flow and heat dissipation.

Proven technologies such as upper and lower spherical bearing mounts, velocity-sensitive damping control and a high-flow piston, optimize performance in varying terrain. They are designed to be extremely durable with a hard-anodized 2.5-inch aluminum body, forged aluminum piggyback body cap and a 5/8-inch(16mm) hard chrome-plated, heat-treated shaft. To maintain supreme control, the FOX shocks’ extension velocity after compression can be fine-tuned to optimize vehicle control.

12-inch Aluminum Beadlock Wheels

The Maverick 100R X rs has12-inch aluminum center-less, computer-optimized true beadlock wheels. This mechanical fastener makes it nearly impossible for the tire to break its bead from the wheel during heavy acceleration or cornering.

Analog / Digital Gauge
The gauge on the Maverick 1000R X rs has an upgraded gauge over the standard model. Featuring state-of-the-art instrumentation with an analog tachometer and speedometer combined with an advanced digital information center.

Custom Steering Wheel

The three-spoke steering wheel is outfitted with molded grips and a brushed aluminum centerpiece to add to the Can-Am side-by-side’s performance looks.

X-package seat trim and graphics

The Maverick 1000R X rs has its own seat design and colors to match its exclusive configuration. Stitched with the X Package logo and highlighted with white and yellow highlights, the seats on the Maverick look like they were taken right out of a race car. The Can-Am Maverick 1000R X features a premium X-Package design with a nod to off-road racing. The Can-Am X-Team-inspired Can-Am black-and-yellow plastic with new white highlights produces a performance-oriented finish that’s bound to turn a few heads.

Dear ATVC:

What exactly is a floating brake caliper and do all ATVs use them?

Floating brake calipers can be a bit of a deceptive label considering they are every bit as subject to the laws of gravity as the rest of us. It is their more common label, the sliding caliper, that does a better job at describing how it works.

Floating calipers have their piston located on the inner brake pad only. The actual body of the caliper is then pulled by the outer brake pad to ensure that pressure is being applied to both sides of the rotor. So why call it “floating” you wonder? Simple- the caliper is not locked into a fixed position, but rather slides along pins whenever you apply your brakes.

Of course the opposite of this is, as logic dictates, a fixed caliper (or sometimes called a dual piston/ multi piston caliper). Unlike the floating caliper, the fixed caliper does not move when applied but instead relies upon pistons on both side of the rotor to put the squeeze on.

Multi piston calipers are typically found on supersport motorcycles and exotic automobiles where scrubbing off excessive speed in a hurry is commonplace. The downside to the fixed caliper, aside from slight weight increases, is cost. They are typically much more expensive than a comparable floating option. While typically considered the more effective of the two at reducing speed, they have a tendency to be susceptible to the buildup of dirt/ corrosion that can lead to sticking over time.

Many stock ATVs make use of floating calipers for the reasons stated though some machines (Can-Am Outlander 1000 for example) do indeed spec twin piston calipers right at the OEM level. Additionally some clever searching reveals that there are aftermarket companies that produce multiple piston calipers for most off-road applications for riders seeking additional stopping power.
