Your CDI probably looks like this:
On 5 pin CDI's there is no ambiguity about how they are powered. The power comes from a moderately high voltage AC winding on the stator. On the 6 pin CDI's shown in the earlier post they can be AC powered or DC powered. The CDI's look identical, except that often the DC powered CDI's are a little bigger. Which one you need to use depends on how your quad is wired.
I've taken apart and traced out the internal schematic for a 5 pin CDI, and an AC powered 6 pin CDI. The surprising thing to me is that they were exactly the same inside except for the connectors. Every resistor value, every transistor type, every capacitor value was exactly the same.
I've never taken a DC powered CDI apart.
