Default 04 650 exhaust???

Just wondering what everybody is using for pipes on their 650's. I would like to get a new pipe, but before I spend 250 - 300 dollars I would like to know what you guys think is the best. I still need it to be legal for state parks also, so I need it to be 96 db and spark arrestor, otherwise I would just gut out my stock pipe. I was looking at the HMF Penland series.

P.S. I have a snorkle mod(like the vdi one), dyno jet kit, and dynatek if that helps.

Before you spend your dough, why don't you try modin' ur stock pipe by cuttin' the end off at the factory weld, drilling 6 half inch holes down thru the baffles with an extra long drill bit and re-weld the cap back on..gives better air flow without the expense and gives a little beefier sound but, not enough to be considered loud..I did mine and spent the cash savings on the module, snorkel kit and the kehin jets.

Would it still be considered "legal" after the mod though? I thought they got pretty loud after that. Although I was tempted to do it just to try/

it does not get louder per say just a deeper tone to it..as for legal I've never put a decibal meter on mine but, I can't see it being over that limit of 96 dbl..and you are not removing the spark arrester and if you do a neat job on the weld and high temp paint job it will still look completely factory and if pulled over show the warden the approved stamp on the sidewall of youe pipe..

I'm gonna go mod it tonight at my dad's shop and see what happens. Hopefully it doesn't get too loud.

Well, I did the mod and repainted it the other night. Haven't taken it out for a ride yet(still letting the ice melt off from last weekend). It didn't get much louder, but did get a little lower in sound. Shouldn't be a problem for trails. Now I just need to get it out and test it out ( and rejet if needed.

If you need help with the jet sizing, check out the Velocity Devices website in their snorkel installation guide and there is a jet sizing chart there.

In Minnesota the complaints of ATV noise is playing a significant role in the systematic closure of riding areas. County by county the anti-atv groups are making it illegal to ride in the road ditches – and in some areas – even on private property - claiming unnecessary nuisance noise. And this is not just a metro area problem. Its everywhere.

The unnecessary modifying of exhaust systems by riders outside of a formal competition arena is contributing to the loss of riding opportunities that thousands of us are fighting to protect at the city, county and state level. Tens of thousands of dollars are being spent to defend the areas still available to ride. And it is a very tough battle that we are to often losing. The tape recordings of ATV noise is difficult evidence to argue against.

The question to ask yourself is simple. With mod’ing your exhaust for some minimal performance increase - Are you being part of the problem or are you being part of the solution?

I wouldn't keep it if it was that loud. Fortunately it is still quieter than my brother in-laws stock grizzly and way quieter than my cr250 which is at the 96 db limit. So there is no problem with any noise pollution!!!
