When Change to Synthetic

There is some debate on that depending on who you talk to. From my experience your engine will kind of wake up between 500-1000miles. Both of my machines did and I still had dyno oil in them at that time. I now run the AC synthetic in the TRV as is seems to make the auto tranny run cooler. I still run the dyno in my 400.
I know guys who swear by changing to synthetic on the first oil change. I personally would choose dyno oil due to cost. I can change the oil on my 400 (dyno oil) for $25 including filter. It is closer to $40 for the synthetic oil with filter change. Still, frequent oil changes are far cheaper than an engine rebuild.
I think the factory reccomended engine break in is 10hours or 100miles. Most AC mechanics will tell you that you can switch to synthetic then if you want to. But, you can NOT switch back and forth between dyno and synthetic.

I ran my '08 TRV 650H1 to 350 miles before changing to AC's Synth oil. Not sure if it's the fault of the oil or not - but i found that the oil was 20w50 - too heavy for the extreme cold here in ND. & that may have been the reason I blew a stator seal in late Dec '08, and had to get it fixed.
I just recently switched to AMSOIL 0w40 ATV wet-clutch synth at 650 miles w/K&N oil filter.
Also both my diff's are AMSOIL 75w90 synth.
My "plan" is now change every 500miles and the diff's every 1200.
Hope this helps

I heard of people switching back & forth and they've suddenly got a leak or an oil consumption issue.
Not sure why they sell BLENDED synth w/no seemingly ill effect, but the 'DON'T GO BACK" rule is something I've followed for yrs.

Moverlie,
The dyno oil I am refferening to is the regular oil with additives for 4 stroke ATV's sold by Arcic Cat like 10w-40 or 5w-40. AC also makes a synthetic oil (could be a blend I don;t know for sure) that is 0w-40.
Also, you can save a bundle of $ over time by switching to an automotive oil filter for a 400 500 AC. I think I pay like $3.99 US for a filter instead of like $10-$15 for an AC filter from the dealer. I also save a little $ by buying oil and filters by the case. I normally end up changing the oil about every other month. That 500-1000miles adds up fast! I usually put 100-200miles on each weekend during the summer.
My reasoning for not switching back and forth is due to exactly what Cups said. It "can" lead to oil leaks and or oil consumption by the engine. Although I know engines that have had one or the other in them from the get go and never switched that had the same leaks and oil consumption. I was told at one time it is also due to some of the oil additives in the different types of oil not being compatable. They basically react with each other negatively and it keeps the oil from doing what it is supposed to and your engine wears excessively.
