Welcome to the forums.

Hopefully someone familiar with this procedure will chime in and get you back on the trails.

I am assuming you are talking about the part of the axle that goes into the front differential?

If so, disconnect all the A-Arms and shocks and get them out of the way. Make sure the ATV is supported properly. Sit on the floor as close to where the tire would be and grasp the axle shaft with both hands, put one or both feet on the frame. Push the axle towards the differential to collapse the CV joint, then pull HARD and QUICK straight out. Repeat if neede but the Cir-clip on the end of the axle stub should pop loose and come free of the differential.

Make sure you have drained the Fluid from the differential or you will make a mess.

This ONLY works on FIS models.

Hope this helps

Default 2005 650 H2 Axle Question

Help!
I have an 05 arctic cat 650H2. Have at least 1 torn CV boot. Does the 650 H2 rear (and front if you know) axle come out as described in the previous post for the 500? I have tried pulling without success and did not want to force it. Any advice appreciated. Arctic cat sells a tool that hooks to a slide hammer, but it costs about 700 with slide hammer and 250 without.
Any advice appreciated.

Paul,

I believe the steps I listed above should work for your machine. Especially if your service manual calls for the use of a slide hammer to remove an axle from the differential. The only manual I have for a 650 is an electronic version and it only has the one procedure for axle removal using a slide hammer.

If all you do is pull straight out (without pushing it in first) you won't have much luck getting it out unless the cir-clip is missing. So push the axle IN towards the differential until it stop (this moves the CV all the way against the back of its housing) the pull OUT quickly. Repeat if needed but usually takes 2 to 3 pulls. As I said before I prefer to put my feet on the differential housing when I pull it gives me a little more leverage.

I have a pdf file with the instructions for the axle removal (with their expensive tool) if you need it PM me an email address.

Hope this helps

Default Axle removal 650 H2

I tried this, pullin so hard I almost yanked it off the jack stands. Was afraid the 650 may have another method, or the tool was required to prevent damage to retainer clip. Am in the process of trying to make a tool using exhaust pipe clamp with welded nut for the slide hammer. Has anyone tried to make a tool? The cost for a fitting from arctic cat is unreasonable.
Thanks for the advice, I will try again when I get home.
I ordered the electronic version of the manual from midwest already. It is where I found the slide hammer and tool method.
Is there an automotive tool that would fit?

i have pulled the cv joint out of an 02 500i, 03 500i, 04 650, 04 400 and 08 700 arctic cats and the way swampy explained it is how i got the cv joint out of every one. you push in and yank like hell. make sure you don't have anything behind you cause on the 04 400 i had a very had time getting it to pop loose, when it did i went rolling backwards. also be careful not to pull the machine off the stands as i almost did that on my 08 700. i also replaced on a new 500 polaris and an 04 660 grizzly and both them are the same way.

The important thing is to push the axle in first, to gain a bit of momentum. If you just yank, it tends to stay put.

Push in on the axle, it should go in about half an inch. Then, with it all the way in, give it a quick jerk, it should pop right out.
