1982 185S , two compression questions
1.) what is 'good' cranking compression. good meaning it should start , not that it's new or fresh.
2.) what position should the compression release lever be in ? Mine is laying full forward because the Prevois owner kid cut the cable. I am only trying to see if this engine still runs. I have good spark ,new plug, and clean fuel.
carb has been thouroughly cleaned and I can't get it fire at all. I suspect the compression brake may be in the wrong position.??
Here's a stupid question too. since the shift indicator is gone. is there a nuetral postion. cause i tried every position with the foot lever Yet I can't get this thing to roll without turning the engine over??????
Does that also mean i could try pulling it with my ATV to start it????
thanx for any help , DAVID

neutral is at the top, its a 5 speed shifts down N,1-5 Forward is ok for the comp lever as long as you can pull it over, any compression over 100 lbs will probably be ok, I've seen them run in the 80lb range without issue
and yes you can pull start it with a quad 3rd gear is usually the best gear for a 185 to start in

tazmo, thanx.
it's been way to many beverages ago that i owned a new 200X but I dont remember my 200X having a Comp release?
did this 185 havea lever to manually release it?? or was it automatic?
this thing is tore up and i only bought it for SOME of the parts, like the good tires, to fix up a 110 for my nephew. thanx again , crossy

well that explains why I din't see it. the pull starter on this one was missing. I adapted my 110 puller over to it as a temporary means of trying to get it running. It worked. I managed to get it started but she smokes steady. guess the rings are worn or stuck. sure runs strong though? A lot stronger than i remember the old 185's running. Maybe it's the open header i made for it and it's just the noise :-) . I got a good front fender and a real good core engine because the trans and clutch seem great and i get to keep the tires for the 110 like i wanted to. This kid really destryed this thing as best he could. there are large pieces of the frame missing and the front forks are bent BAD! thanx for the help fellows. crossy

Couple hundred bucks fixes the motor, forks are available on ebay for cheap even suspended forks from a 200 s / m or es can be made to work. What did he break on the frame, I'm more than 40 and have POUNDED 185's and never did any serious frame damage; forks, you bet, but a frame? I want to see the kids back 15 years from now
And your 200 X was a kick start no comp release necessary although I've seen a few with 185 / 200 heads on them for light weight riders to kick over.

I may have a frame for a 185/200... I have a 1985 200x frame and some other unsuspended rear frame (no forks) in the junk pile. The second frame has no model number on it...
I lucked out when I bought the 185s from the kid. He didnt think it ran. He must have thought it was cool to remove the air boxes and filters from them so the one he had running smoked and ran horribly. I'm not sure why the 185 was "junked" because it ran fine for me. I also needed a recoil starter which sent me back 110 on ebay for the whole housing and rebuilt insides.
Let us know how the project ends up.

yeah, I decided I'm going to sell it , ther e are too many things wrong with this 185 to try to repair and the 110 is giving us trouble with spark and other things so I'll sell the 185 engine. The tranny works great and the carb was just thouroughly cleaned. It starts even when cold and runs strong with no noises but smokes steady. my home email address is all4trux@snip.net . make an offer before it goes to ebay. we don't need to talk about money here on the forums, thanx , DAVID
