Finally got the clutch off and as expected, the shoes have deep grooves in them. Looks like the drum is made with the raised rings inside it. Is that correct? Hope I can get some riding out of it by just replacing the shoes.

The clutch outer should be smooth on the inside where the weights ride. The weights will have grooves in them even when they are brand new. You need to be looking at the amount of material left to determine if they need replacing.

I have shoes ordered. The inside of the drum has some grooving but I'm going to use it. I probably won't ride this thing 10 minutes a year so it will outlast me I'm sure. Not sure why I even started throwing money into it except that I enjoy taking someone else's junk and making it work. Thanks
