Default yamaha 3wheeler unsure of size and year????

hey everyone, this is my first post at this forum!!! i just picked up a yamaha 3 wheeler yellow and black front and rear suspension backi s single coilover big front tire wide low profile tires in rear chain driven, 2 stroke. water cooled etc..

i dont know what year this is and im not sure if it is 125 or a 250 i think its an '85 ? is there an easy way to tell? is there any where that has specs on these machines, or info of any kind? i tried the web but only forums seem to come up.

ive heard people say these things are outlawed. is this true?

it starts and runs. but wont idle on its own. when it does run it isdeffinately lacking power, think i need to rejet or rebuild the carb so i will probally pic up a new muffler first. any tips on what brands are good for the money and wont break the bank? their is a race exhaust on there but my not be jetted for it. could this be the problem?

sorry this thread is all over the place. starvin for info

thanks in advance

could it be a tri-z250.some of them were yellow and black.I'm almost certain they were water-cooled.I think they had two headlights side-by-side.They were two stroke. If it is a tri-z then the model number may be YTZ250N.bikebandits.com has this listed if you need oem parts. There is also some pictures of some of these parts that might help you identify this atv

yep. The 1985 model Tri Z 250 is yellow and black (changed to red and white in 1986). They are water cooled - 2 small radiators one on each side of the frame just behind the front fork area. Also on the Tri Z 250 the fuel tank is under the seat. What looks like the fuel tank in front of the seat is where the air filter is located. This was done to lower the centre of gravity by having the fuel tank under the seat.
The bike also came out with 'gold' anodised rims so if the bike still has the originals they should be gold in colour. Rear tyres are on 8" rims not 9" which is what alot of the quads have now.
1985 Tri Z 250 is a five speed opposed to the 6 speed 1986 model.
If it is a Tri Z 250 you'll be ok for parts and information etc. I'm in Australia and I'm always on the net purchasing gear from the states for my bike.
In reagrds to being outlawed my understanding (someone else may confirm) was that late 1986 the manufacturers had to stop producing 3 wheelers due to the many accidents that were occuring - hence the 4 wheelers.
Hope this info is useful to you.

A good site also to visit is www.3wheelerworld.com

I've found the following to be the most useful:
Type in Yamaha Tri Z 250 on e-bay - a whole heap of parts come up for sale both new and used.
Yamaha still has the generic parts available. ie. bolts etc.
Maier ATV plastics sell new plastics.
The 3 and 4 wheeler shop.

You can also get a cross reference cd from Zedder Enterprises (www.zedder.com) who has put in all Yamaha models from 1963 to 2005. You can use this to see what other bikes use the same parts etc.

It does sound like you have a Tri-z. Sounds like its a 1985 model. They also have a 1985 1/2 model which is the one I have. It is red and black. DG still sells the DG silencer for them. I believe it is right at 93 dollars. Another good place for parts is bikebandit.com They have a ton of parts for the tri-z and other trikes as well. You can also get a K&N filter for it.
