Default start problem-help!

Guys,
I have a Yamaha 225 DX three wheeler with electric start -shaft drive.
It pull starts no problem and runs good!
Problem is with electric start. It will turn over fast and strong with the electric start but will not start. One pull with the cord and it starts up? what can I look at with the electric start circuit?
Battery is new
Help! Snow on the way!!

The engine turns over, right? Not just the starter motor...

Default start problem-help!

i had the exact same problem with a 84 yfm 200 which is almost the same bike minus 1 wheel and also had a new battery and never did figure it out . it would just turn over like it was really struggling but the bike ran fine when pull started.

yep--exactly! Wierd--I think it has something to do with spark strength. Any mechanics out there?? Thanks again--snow is here-no 3 threewheeler!

From what I first read...
The electric start turns over the engine fast and strong, or is the starter really straining?

May I make a few suggestions...
Using just the electric start conditions

Did you check for spark at this point using the electric start?
Did you check if the plug at that point to see if it was wet?

It starts when you pull start so that says that the pulser in the mag and the CDI unit is working ok.

Did you try overriding the push button and starter relay by carefully using a set of jumper cables from the positive post of the battery directly to the starter post of the starter, to see if you can get the engine to start that way?

Just to hone in on some other parts of the circuit. Luck find on a different thread. Like to thank the fellow but lost my place. Wire Schem for the 200E

IDEA!
Turn on the lights Hi beam puting a load on the cuircuit.
Try to start it with the electric start and see if the regulator warms up or gets hot.
Then start the machine with the pull start with lights on rev the engine and see it the lights flicked like it was vibrating.
Or if the headlight gets over bright than usual.

Hot regulator using electric start and lights flicker I would start thinking that the regulator may have something to do with drawing the current with the use of the starter and negating the coil voltage which will lower the spark output.

Tommy,
Thanks for all your time working on this with me.
I changed plug--no spark when I use electric starter--good spark when I pull start.

Thanks for the schematic!! Its cold out--ill try again tomorrow to troubleshoot.

You are welcome on the help!
I accedently ran into it on another thread.
Looking and trying to analyze the circuit it is so simple but the problem and the circuit I stll have come up with a blank.
Looking at yamaha YMT 225 DX I made a mistake with the first diagram.

So I searched that site for another schematic

http://www.files.3wheelerworld.com/Wiring/YTM225DXKDXLDXN.jpg

Which I think it is closer to you model number
double check on this site for more info with the exact model number you have.

Tommy,
There is so much going on at once when you hit the start button! I just dont know the functions of all the components in the ignition circuit. Something has to say send the voltage to the coil when energized--
Has to be a different path --ill try and trace both starting scenerios.from your schematic
I reeeeeeeeely asppreciate your time!
