Default 1984 Honda 200ES Big Red Clutch....

I just purchased this 1984 Honda Big Red. The guy I bought it from said he just had a new clutch put in. At first when you would put it in gear it would leap forward and would die. I adjusted the clutch by backing the center shaft out tell I felt resistance and screwed it in a 1/4 of turn. That took up the slack in the shifter and would not let the ATV move forward tell I let my foot off the shifter. As soon as I let my foot off the shifter the ATV wants to move forward, almost like letting a clutch out on a car. The RPM's are way down and still wants to move. What do I have to do so the ATV will not move forward tell I give it gas , so it can idol in gear without taking off or dieing????

Thank you

The centrifugal clutch looks like it was replace too. If new will it hook up tell it gets broke in??? The shoes look like they have plenty of material on them and the drum has slight grove in it from the lines in the shoe material. Thanks for you help

What I was getting at is, maybe there is too much material on the centrifugal clutch "pedals", or arms, what ever you want to call them, and the extra weight is causing them to engage too soon.

I don't think the clutch being new is the problem. The ATC's didn't behave like that when they were new. Sounds like it may have been assembled wrong when the new clutch was installed. Might have to get a service manual and tear it apart to find out what's wrong.

yeah, I think the person that put it in did one of two things wrong.Put the big washer with the collar on it backwards. Or over tightend the 30mm nut that holds the clutch on.
I put it back together, readjusted the clutch and it warked great. The clutch turned freely by hand and was good. Who knows what the problem was. Thanks all for the help
