Default 84 Honda ATC 250R Engine Removal???????

I went out this morning to the garage to start tearing the engine out so I could get it to a friend to get it rebuilt. Well first thing that went wrong was one of the drive sprocket bolts head is rounded!!!! Yippy!! So I worked on that for a couple minutes and couldn't get it so, I moved on to bigger and better things. Followed the instructions in the manual and wow that is for a 81 or 82 or 83!! Even though it says 81-84 on it. There is an engine mount bolt that you can barely get to and when I got the nut off the bolt has no room to slide out b/c the SWINGARM is there?!!!
DO I HAVE TO REMOVE THE WHOLE REAR TO GET THE ENGINE OUT???? Please tell me no!! I thought I would do this so my friend who is currently out of town wouldn't have to waste time w/ it, he could just do the engine. Please HELP!!!! Also any hints on taking the drive sprocket bolt out that is rounded???

You have to remove the brake pedal to allow the swingarm bolt to slide out. Its a bit tricky so make sure you have the bottom skid plate sitting on something. It will come, just take your time. Shouldn't have to remove the sprocket...just undo the masterlinnk in the chain.

OK!!!!!!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!! Another question. Again the clymer manual shows 2 nuts to adjust the chain length. Mine don't have that. I remember on my 200X I had to loosen a bolt then use a hammer and screwdriver to turn this big nut to tighten/loosen the chain. I will look for the master link!! I need a new chain anyway. This atc is beaten up!! The guy on ebay screwed me. I did only get for 450 but 200 for my friend to fix the rod and 3rd gear which is out and among all the other parts I am going to have to get to restore it. Should be fun though! Thanks again!!!!!!!

As far as adjusting the chain goes, I don't remember for sure, but I don't think there is an adjuster on the 81-84 R's, I believe you have to do via the swingarm bolt. Just make sure you get it even on both sides.

Ok, I took care of the lower rear engine mount bolt near the swingarm but now the engine is lose but I can't get it out of the frame!! I put the swing arm bolt back in, but do I need to keep it out. I looks like I need about an extra 2 inches and I don't think I am going to get that by leaving the swingarm bolt out??!! The Clymer manual I am going by has me taking the entire clutch assembly out!! So I did. It wasn't hard. The Clutch plates, washers, clutch rod, clutch basket and cover, etc., is all out!! But that might have free'ed up an inch if that!! HELP AGAIN!!! Thanks!!!

Leave the swinger bolt out until you get the motor removed from the frame, it gives you a little bit more wiggle room. Also, did you unbolt the carb? How bout remove the foot pegs? Removing those 2 items gives you a little more room also.

The foot pegs are still on and the carb is off b/c it leaked so I bought another one. I did put the swingarm bolt back in b/c that made me uneasy leaving that out and the whole rear moving around. I will try those 2 things tomorrow. Thanks so much for your help. I have posted on here a couple times for help and never got any!! This is the most ever. Hope I haven't bothered ya w/ the private messages. Thanks again!!!!!
