Default 84' honda 200es

Hi, bought my big red not running. I power washed it shot gas in cyl and it fired up. Cleaned out tank pulled the recoil and it started idled throttled up and ran for 3 minutes and quit. I have digtal mutimeter and checked, coil, spark wire and spark generator all ok. Generator is powering the green light on the ignition switch when i pull the recoil.
No spark after the 1st pull, wait 10 seconds and does spark then none if I continue to pull. CDI checks out bad and so does the cap for the spark plug after removing it from the wire no continuity?. what cause CDI to go bad? or did I not have the correct digital multimeter. according to the Honda manual you need a special one? Mine is an OTC automotive type with ohms 2 thru 20m.
Any help out there would be great.
Mike

I would first clean the carb, sounds like its not getting gas since it only fired on gas you put in the plug hole and quit after that. If it idles up that much it means you are running lean and starving for fuel. To run you need gas, spark and compression. Start with the gas since I think thats the problem and then go to the rest.
