gear oil in a 200e?
Sup guys. I have a 200e I submarined 3-4 months ago. After towing it home and draining the carb and fuel tank I decided to see if it would fire before I changed the oil. Sure enough blown head gasket. Anyways I finally ordered parts a couple days ago and pulled the engine yesterday. I pulled the pull rope assembly and loosed the bolts to the cover that is under it (covers the workings of the starter?). The fluid that came out was greyish brown and pretty thick if not for the pungent smell I would have just figured I had water in my oil. But this stuff smelled just like gear oil (the stuff you put in the rear differential on your pickup). I was under the impression that the engine oil lubed everything on this engine. Is there suppose to be gear oil in there? Is this just an oil/water mix that has developed a smell over time? Did the PO put LUCAS in it? ( Hmm, it looks like gear oil, it's as thick as gear oil, and it smell just like gear oil I wander what LUCAS actually is?)
