I am looking into buying a 400 quad..

I have my choices down to the Polaris 400L and a 400EX..

I am happy with my Trail Blazer reliablity and such(and i've seen some other polaris take a beating and keep on going!)..so lets not get into which is a better quad in the sense!

I want to know..which one will be the fastest stock and have the most power.

And if i want to do some mods..which one has the most room to do so.

I love the PVT system, you are never in the wrong gear!

But then again..i'd like to go back to shifting and having the clutch.

What do you guys think?

My uses are trails, open roads, not really a lot of mud, and some hill climbing

I believe 400EX for serious playin around and 400L for more serious woods, mud, mountain, 4x4 stuff cuz of its 4x4 features and backround

Are you talking about the Scrambler 400 4x4 or Scrambler 400 2x4? It gets confusing, Polaris shouldn't have named them all the same! :-)

I would go with the Scrambler as I have been very satisfied with my Trailblazer too. You also get more power out of the Scrambler because it is a 2 stroke. The EX is a good quad too and I miss shifting and the clutch sometimes myself. But when it would come down to it I'd rather have a 2 stroke. I'd like to see Polaris make a manual clutch Scrambler that would be awesome! What you need to do is go test both quads and compare them. That will give you a better idea of which one you want. Tell me about your Tralblazer. Have you done any modifcations to it? Mine is currently stock but that will change soon.

Since I own a 400EX, I will favor it more, but I think it would be better than a Scrambler. It is lighter, has better suspensions and handles better, especially the wide-open trails you'll be riding.

Routine maintnence is very easy, much easier than any Polaris. I have a '94 Polaris 400 4x4, and to easily get at the battery, I have to take off all the rear plastic and the rear rack. On my 400EX, I just pop the seat off and the battery is right there. Oil changes are a breeze, chain adjustment takes 2 minutes and air filter access is very, very simple.

If I were in your situation, which I was, I would get a 400EX. It is a very fun machine, capable of any trail (minus mud and rock), and it can really rock on a MX track. And that brings up another topic: jumping. If you plan to do any jumping, forget the Scrambler. The Scrambler 2x4 is 100 pounds heavier than the 400EX. Wheelies? Yes, I know a Scrambler can be wheelied, but the 400EX is a wheely king. I don't have it down yet, but I know that wheelies can be ridden for miles.

I'm impressed with the thought that put into the 400EX at the factory. Durability and ease of use are exceptional. Honda didn't cut very many corners when building the 400EX, if any. The 400EX is more expensive than the Scrambler, but it is money well spent. Just my input . . .

I have always been a fan of extreme change, I absolutly hated the 400EX when I had my Blaster, I hated 4-strokes for that matter, but when it came time to choose a new quad, I choose the 400EX for some reason. I think that was one of the best descisions of my life, that and wearing underwear, but thats a different story. j/p I say do the spontaneous. Reasearch them like crazy, dig up every bit of info. Then test ride them both, make sure you do that. THen you can choose. If you say u miss shifting, I'll put money down you'll regret gettting a auto(not saying auto is bad).

My brother had a '98 Sport & now has a '00 400EX. The EX is a much better jumper. It's extremely fun & easy to ride. Super easy to wheelie. On the other hand it's kind of hard to start in the cold, the engine doesn't have near the potential of the Polaris 400, the PVT tranny is better for hillclimbs etc.
Factory stock they seem really close performance wise. But spending the same amount of $$$ on mods for both the Scrambler will be farther ahead.
If you like to wheelie & jump get the EX, if you like to the benefits of a PVT tranny & the potential for a real powerhouse get the Scrambler.
Also, I'm not saying the Scrambler can't jump because it can. The EX is just easier to toss around. Another note is that the 400EX is kinda on the small side.
I looked at both & chose the Scrambler (4X4). Then again I really didn't have a desire to jump cars!
