Since you said that any choke at all floods it, my money is on valve adjustment on the intake side. It sounds like it is bleeding off a bit of compression while cold and is also letting too much wet fuel trickle in when cold.
I don't think you will learn too much with a compression test as long as you have a decompression lever on the cam. That is going to show 120 lbs I believe no matter what your compression is at.
I bet you have no clearance on the intake valves.
do you know how the decompression lever o nthe cam works? i think i might have problems with mine.
If it was a pilot jet being too small (which is the other most common culprit for hard starting when cold) it will start and warm up much easier with the choke on.</end quote></div>

Had the same problem on mine as well. Posted about it a long time ago, but nothing really helped. Last month i upgraded the carb to a tm48 and had a valve job done. The exhaust side was a bit tight but the intake was good. Now the doggone thing starts when its freezing outside with no choke...Go figure.
I would usually just put a heater next to the block when it was cold before a ride and that would start it everytime for the rest of the day. I would definitely check the carb settings and if you have never done a valve job that would be highly recommended.
Good Luck.
