Default starter

Can someone tell me how to remove the starter on my Hi Bird 250cc? I removed 3 bolts on one side & when I removed that, there was a gear in that cover. I removed the long screws on the other side but the starter didn't budge, plus the exhaust is in the way. It is a top mounted starter & it appears that is it dragging causing the battery wires to get super hot when cracking. Cranks a lot faster with the spark plug out & wires don't get hot but with the plug in, starter drags & wires get hot only when cranking. I have researched the internet but can't find anything showing my specific starter removal.

Assuming it's the CG type engine all that is holding the starter is the 2 bolts behind the exhaust pipe. Maybe the O ring has hardened and will take some persuasion.

Are you saying the long screws that are phillips head or the 2 bolts that are bolted on the engine case? If it's those 2 bolts, looks like I'll have to remove the exhaust to get to them.

It's the two bolts that screw into the engine case.

I didn't try those 2 bolts cause it looked hard to get to. If I remove those bolt, will the starter just come off? Is there a chain involved or does the starter have a gear that turns the motor over. I want to make sure I don't screw something up. Thank you

Remove those bolts and the starter will pull out. No chain. The reduction gears will stay in place.

Thank you so much for your help. I feel like I can do it now. Then I can see what type of starter I need to order.

Got the starter off after removing the exhaust. Came off pretty easy. It is a 9 spline & will order a new one from VMC Chinese parts for $22.50
