Default What kind of ATV would you guys recommend?

My budget is ~$3500 and I will be riding trails, in fields, on sand dunes, and in the mud but also on the road so I would like an ATV that also has a nice top speed.

I was leaning away from utility ATVs because they're so bulky and leaning more towards sports ATVs because of the speed and acceleration seem really nice compared to the utility ones. I was thinking of getting something like a '07 TRX 450R but I heard that racing quads can stall out when going at low speeds. I was also thinking of something like a TRX 400X but I would like for it to be able to haul *** on the road.

I'm also 6'3" and weigh 180 Lbs so would a 400 be too small?

Thanks

Have a friend who had the 400ex from Honda and it did very well. Good all around quad with good reliability too. That being said, if you anticipate deep mud, and large rocks, I'd go with a sport utility quad like the Can-Am Renegade 500. You might be able to find one of the older ones at that price.

First, what is the dune/mud split? Do you already have riding buddies? If so, what do they ride?

Dune riding on a sport quad is about the most fun thing you can legally do on a quad, imho. Mud riding on the other hand, is much better suited to a 4x4.

I don't think I'll really be around deep mud or large rocks at all. Do you think a 450R would be a bad choice for trail riding? I've heard they have problems with stalling at low speeds.

Unfortunately I don't have any friends that ride.

I won't be in deep mud so I doubt I'll get stuck so a 2x4 should work, I will probably take it to the sand dunes in Albany, GA over the summer for some fun and how is riding a sports quad on sand dunes different than a utility quad?

I've just read around that the 450R and other sports quads like it go really fast, while being good at everything else, and I have an affinity for fast things

Also, I've heard that the racing quads can have problems on trails with stalling out at low speeds, any thoughts on this?

Also remember that most sport quads are 2 stroke. They require much more maintenance then a 4 stroke.

Another quad to consider is the Yamaha Raptor 700, if you can find one in your price range. Bigger quad than the 450's.

I know its not a sports quad so it will be different from a 450r but can you tell me the main differences? Besides the bigger CC engine and that it would be better on trails. If I got the 450r I would put a 13T sprocket on to help avoid stall outs.

Do you think a raptor 700 would be better than the sports quad for me?

The Raptor 700 is a sport quad. One of the guys I ride with likes them well enough to buy 2 of them.
