That's what I always think when i see someone spend tons of money on a big rv or toy hauler, can spend a lot of nights in a hotel or cabin for the cost of that. Unless you take a trip at least once a month, it just doesn't make sense. I used to have an 18 ft car trailer that worked great, we could fit 4 atvs on it easily and it only cost about $1000 brand new back in 2007 I think. Pulled it with an F-150 so didn't need a heavy duty truck either for towing. The Z71 Silverado I have now would pull it very easily if I still had the trailer but sold it years ago. Most of the toy haulers are very heavy and require at least a 3/4 ton truck to tow properly, some even a one ton dually.

 

What can I say, it was an impulse purchase. I really wanted one, and I bought a top of the line Raptor that had very little use, but soon discovered all the pitfalls. One thing that has held us back has been financial drains unrelated that have kept us from riding altogether. One reason we did buy it was we have to travel a minimum of 4 to 5 hours to ride. Our open trailer is way overloaded when we put three on it. And because the riding areas are so far away, we wanted to have a place to sleep. At the time, the cabin availability on the Hatfield McCoy wasn't exactly plentiful and you couldn't just decide to take off for the weekend. You had to plan months in advance and that doesn't fit our lifestyle. As we age, I must say I tend to lean more towards a pure camper now. And leave the ATV's at home. Or pull a trailer behind a motorhome. But those are almost as expensive as a house now days. The Toyhauler I looked at and really like runs 100 grand. AND, I'd need to upgrade from a 3/4 ton to a full boat duallie that can handle 18,000 lbs. And at that point, I am thinking do I really want to go into debt again that deep? The answer is no. And even if I did get one, there are very few places that can park a rig that big. Then there is memberships in campgrounds, and high costs to park, and increased fuel costs towing a big rig like that etc. About the only thing that would tempt me now is if I retired and did a LOT, and I mean like full time RV living a lot of travelling. Then it may make some sense.

 

We do the Motor home & enclosed trailer route.
It costs a fortune to keep it warm in the garage over winter.
We do plan to settle down and do some serious RVing at
some point.
We have no excuse for not going to ride all the time....but we don't.

 

I lied.......we have tons of "reasons" not
to ride on a consistent bases.

I don't have a problem with cabins, hotels or airplanes
but my travel buddy does. It's his only option.

 

He also has a knack for finding the lowest points to drive under....
backing up to get out of a predicament is quite interesting.
