Default Help with new rifle

Here's some info on Weatherby. It looks like Howa still makes the Vanguard barreled actions in Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weatherby

The Japanese tooling for rifle barrels,is very good..Browning has used it for many years.Weatherby rifles are not my favorite, but I do love the ammo produced by Mr. Weatherby.Norma ammo is as accurate as most hand loads.

Congrats Tank, looks like a great choice. Now we can start a whole new discussion about the scope. I think a silver finish Leupold VX-II 3X9 or in your area, maybe even a 4X12 would be sweet on that rifle.

Thanks guys. I know, its got to be a silvert one. I was hoping for a VX-III. But going w/ a local gun shop for any halp I may need later, i's gonna cost me. What about breakm-in procedures? Is it worth it the trouble?

The test target that came with your rifle looks pretty good. With the cost of ammo now, other than just getting used to shooting it you shouldn't have to do a lot of "breaking-in". Pros and cons about the use of break-in compounds on the bullets to polish the bore. I'm old school on that one. I don't want ANYTHING abrasive going down the barrel!

Do u mind if I ask your reasons for using the bore snake. Are they better for stainless barrels? I was looking at one in the Cabelas catalog being used on a stainless barrel or is it just a coincidence? Seems that would save some cash. Never having owned a rifle I was just getting ready to invest in some supplies. Ive only bought a basic cleaing kit years ago for my shotgun and .22. My supervisor at work, ex-military who shoots almost every weekend and in local tournaments, doesn't believe in having to break-in a barrel. I'm still undecided. I might do it for the fact its a new gun, shooter, scope and I could use those shots just gettin everything right. I was watching Sniper Rifle II (?) on the Military channel last night. Pretty interesting. Some guys leave the barrel fouled after shooting for the same next shot that counts as when they practiced. Thanks for everyone's input in this thread. Gettin me off to a good start with useful products, techniques and insight.
