Funny, they don't show reloading it.

I'll stick with something I can carry with me and shoot far away from me and reload easily.

They reload by pulling the entire barrel pack. The individual rounds are packed in the barrel and fired electrically by a microprocessor. This sort of arrangement allows extremely high rates of fire.

It's an interesting concept but finding the proper application seems to be sort of elusive. Probably the most practical application would be as point defense against incoming missiles. Mounted on a ship to defend against incoming anti-ship missiles or on a tank to destroy incoming anti-tank missiles. It would probably be most useful for destroying incoming artillery and mortar fire. The US shipboard phalanx gun system was turned into a land based variant called C-Ram to defend bases in Iraq and Afghanistan against rockets mortars and such and it looks as if "metal storm" might be quite well suited to that sort of role.

I believe that system was being developed as an area denial weapon. Just a way to get around the treaties on land mines. They set them up to cover an area and use a sensor system to target anything that comes in. I wouldn't wt to be the guy who has to go around and reload them. That would suck to carry half the weapon system as a magazine.

Now me, I'd prefer a shotgun... maybe an full auto AA12 if I could get my hands on one. But for now, I'll stick to my Benelli semi auto.
