Foreman ES Shift Problem

Foreman ES Shift Problem
I recently purchased a 2001 TRX450ES. Most of the time the ES works like I think it should. But too often, It doesn't shift to 2nd. It will shift down every time and into reverse, but it doesn't want to shift up all the time. The solonoid makes a sound but it doesn't shift. The gear indicator sometimes shows ----- and I have to use the manual shift lever to get it straightened out. Even after turning it off and back on it won't shift up. Sometimes the gear indicator flashes from one gear to another.
Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks,

Foreman ES Shift Problem
I adjusted the clutch per the owner's manual......and it works like a new one!!
It has more power and shifts everytime. The clutch must have been slipping all the time. It has 2000 miles on it and I guess the previous owners never adjusted the clutch.
I don't know what kind of oil is in it, but it's clean. Here in the mountains of VA it's about 20 in the mornings and 50's in the day. What oil should I use? In the summers it averages about 75.
I need to change and adjust everything I guess.
Thanks for the suggestions and the interest.

a good 10w-30 oil will do you fine. (my opinion) I'd go with AMSOIL 0W-40 Synthetic http://www.amsoil.com/products/aff.html the only thing is that it is expensive.
