Default What do you think about 2010 Rancher?

Hi , I am thinking about buying a Honda Rancher 2010 Model.
I want it to hunt off of and will occasionally have it in a foot and a half of water and mud.
This bike I found is a manual transmission,2 or 4wd, Limited slip, Power steering,electric or pull start,1500 miles,Adult ridden and maintained,no winch.Garage kept .
Is this a good ATV for my purposes ?He is asking $3,700 is this a good deal, bad deal,so so deal.?
I need to know quick as I am going to go look at it tomorrow if it is good for my purpose and a good machine without any known issues.
Thanks
Craig

the 420 rancher will do the job that you mention without any issue. The main problem with this atv is the fuel filter get dirt an needs replaced due to this sorry gas in our area..You will enjoy....Price seem an lil high 2me..maybe 3000 to 3200 would be better but if yo really like it get it...

Super reliable quad. If it's mud that's a foot and a half deep get aggressive mud tires and a winch. Sooner or later everyone gets stuck. With the limited slip and solid axle rear it's a limited mud machine. Independent rear suspension and full 4wd will give you a good bit extra ability in mud. I've been in a few situations where I was able to just make it out of a really bad mudhole with IRS and my son having the same 4wd system but with a solid axle rear. That extra 3-4 inches of clearance came in handy. At the time I had a Polaris Sportsman X2 500 and he had a Polaris ATP 500 with identical stock 489 tires.

Just some random thoughts. I like Honda a lot and they are pretty bulletproof. If you go for it, get the winch just to have it. We've used our winches numerous times to pull ourselves out of deep, deep mud and out of waist deep snow in the wintertime.

6-ply mudding tires will really make that rancher feel heavy & slow. The SRA is also not desireable in mud- very little GC under the rear carrier. You'd be better of with king quad 500 with the IRS and front locker or even a ploaris sportsman 500 with the IRS & AWD... imo.

Thanks for all the info guys, now I have found another one and Iam going to look at it today as well.
This one was also garage kept,2009 Honda Foreman. It has a 2500 Warn winch about 2500, miles as well,it has almost new 27inch ITP xtr tires and Itp ss 212 wheels. It is manual shift ,NO power steering, electric start or pull start.
I can get it for $3700.00 as well.
Given just these two rigs which one represents the best value for my purposes ?
of these two which one would you pick?
Thanks a bunch
Craig

If it were me I'd go for the first one. 27" tires on a Rancher is a lot of strain on the transmission and engine. Neither one is high mileage for a Honda. I'd just hesitate to make a judgement without checking how good a shape it's in. Also, see if the seller has the stock tires as part of the package with the second quad. Again, I'd be a little concerned about how long he ran tires that size.

Hi,the 27 inch tires are on the 500 Foreman and factory tires on the Rancher.
would that make a difference in you choice ?

You will lose a lot of low end with the engine trying to turn 27" tires. The 500 will do it though. My general rule with 500's is to stick to 26" or below. On a quad with a CVT (belt driven transmission) you can easily change the clutching to accommodate the larger tires. With the Honda semi-automatic I don't know if there are changes you can make. If it doesn't bother you to lose low end it might be worth a look.

I just put on 6ply 26x9-12 fronts and 26x11-12 Maxxis Zillas with a tall 1.18" lug on my 350 Grizzly and notice no power loss or top end speed.
The 420 sure should have no problem going up from its stock little 24" 2plys I would hope.
Granted the Zilla is the lightest 6 ply mud tire made. Zilla 26" are Lighter then most 25" tires. Maxxis Zilla

Back to the question, $3700 for a 2010 4x4 400 class utility with the $800 power steering option seem not bad to me but I,m not up on my U.S used prices.
