Default Just bought 01 Rancher

Hey all. After buying Yamaha's most my life I just purchased an 01 Rancher ES 4x4. Believe it or not it only has 251 miles on it. Mint. I was just curious if there are any problems I sure be aware of with this model and what kind of luck everyone has had with their Ranchers
Thanks in advance

I have had two of them, and both are excellent machines that have given no problems.

Do invest in a Warn 424! It will turn it into a selectable 2wd/4wd, and allow you to run in 2wd when 4wd isn't needed. Best mod you can do to this machine........

Plus, I am not real fond of the stock tires or heavy steel rims. I switched them out for some ITP Holeshot ATR's on some lighter alloy ITP rims. Also widens the quad, for some extra stability. Turned it into a whole different machine!

The ES system can be problematic sometimes (the reason I always avoid it). The angle sensors are under recall right now, but I think that is for later models, not the older ones.

I would take your vin number to your dealer there where 2 updates to those machines, one was some a arm brakets and a shift linkage plate.

Take it back and get the standard shift. In my opinion the ES should have never been put on ATV's. Always a loose wire, bad angle sensor, ECM, or shift button problem. Don't leave home w/o the manual shifter that is provided in the trunk. And if you haven't looked yet, go make sure you have one.

Thanks for the replies. I will do the vin # thing cluby. As far as the ES being troublesome, I never flinched at that. My friend has had three ES Foremans and has never had a problem. He NEVER took care of his ATV's. Beat the crap out of them and may have washed them once each. All of them had over 3500 miles when traded. That's why the ES thing didn't concerm me so much.

Well, if you get a code 3, 7, or 9 nine times out of ten it's the angle sensor. I don't know what causes them to fail. Maybe it was a bad batch they had. I just know I have replaced more of them than any other part on Honda atv's in the past 2 years.
