I'm having trouble with getting my 06 450r to start easy and idling. How long exactly does a guy need to leave the choke on when warming it up. does anyone elses pipe out of the block get red hot when warming up? Not happy with this machine.

 

You have to know the drill! Cold Start-I press the accelerator several times to inject raw fuel into the carb. Place the choke on full and kick it over (will start first kick most every time!). The engine will race (not good with stone cold oil!), so I immediately grab the choke an turn it off while I baby the throtle to keep it running.

Sure, mine is cold blooded and I have to baby it for several minutes while it warms up, but that's the price I am more than willing to pay for the performance I am getting! You can also turn you idle stop up for a few more rpm while it warms up, then you don't have to baby it so much.

Also, do consider that your slow jet might be clogged. This would leave you lean at startup and on the bottom end. (Does it backfire on deceleration???)

Hot starts-Pull the hot start button and do not even touch the throtle until it comes to life. Startes first kick every time

It's a "pumper" carb, so when you hit the throtle it injects fuel directly. You can use this as a sort of "primer" on a cold start....

....but, if you use the throtle when the engine is hot, that injection of fuel will flood it out and it will be hard to start (most likely you will be cranking it a good long while to clear that out!).

The big black plastic **** on the side of the carb is the throtle stop. You can turn it up during startup, but after the engine is warm it will race, and you will just have to turn it down again.
