2001 Honda Rancher manual transmission stuck
They are known for breaking the shift arm inside the front engine case cover. If the unit has not had an updated shift arm assembly installed, most likely this is the problem
On occasion I have also found the star wheel bolt on the shift drum work itself loose. This will also make shifting a problem

I have tried rocking and it still want come out of whatever gear its in. Is the shift arm hard to replace or is that something that I could do. I feel I have pretty good mechanical skills.
If I open the front cover will the gears and stuff fall out from transmission?

If you have good mechanical skills it's not hard. Just be REALLY careful removing the front case cover bolts as they will break. If you haven't yet, pick up a repair manual to read through to determine if you want to tackle the project first. You will find it's handy to have in your shop any way. There was a recall on the shift fork and you may be able to get it replaced via the dealer.
