Default 2000 Rancher charging problem

I have a 2000 rancher es with about 5000 miles and have had no problems till now. Does anyone know of charging issues with this. I checked the stator and it is working fine. There is a full 12 volt draw with the key off. It will run but it also discharges the battery as it is running. Pulled fuses one by one and the main is the only one that makes a difference of course. If I pull the plug on the rectifier the short stops. BUT, I am not sure if this means anything cause I am not sure what else is connected to that circuit. The mechanic at the dealership said he has seen an few go bad but not the stators. Any Ideas? The next step is to start pulling plugs and tracing wires I guess. Any help with known issues would be great. Thanks

So you have a draw with key off that goes away when you unplug the rectifier/regulator?

That would indicate bad rectifier. They have been known to fail like that, and checking draw with key off is one of the tests described in the manual for my machines (Rincon, Foreman).

Anyway, I believe the rectifier needs replaced. Did you take ohm meter readings between each leg of the stator? Also check each leg for continuity to ground.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. I'd be the stator will check out fine, and new rectifier will solve the problem. Let us know how it turns out.

Thank you for the reply. I am leaning towards the rectifier myself. The stator checked out good. I am going to do some more checking to try to narrow it down. I will deffinately be checking this site out more! I also have a 2006 foreman 500 and I love both machines.

If there's a draw with the regulator hooked up, and it's gone when you unplug it, it pretty much means bad regulator/rectifier... It's listed in the charging system trouble shooting thing in the manual.

Remember, all the power to the electrical system runs through the regulator connector. When it is disconnected the short will go away if it is down the line from it.

I thought everything but the regulator ran through the main fuse, the key switch and the fuse block?

According to the pages I got from the dealer, the rectifier, ingnition switch, and the cpu run on the same circuit. Did a little more testing today. Getting some mixed results. One thing that puzzles me.... I had the rectifier plugged in but not on the frame and when I went to bolt it back on it sparked. The rectifier does not ground on the frame...right? It has a ground wire in the harness. Not sure why ot dod that.

It was the rectifier. There was a 13 amp draw with the key off when it should be 1 milliamp. Charges like a champ now. Thanks for the help.
