Hello,I have a 86 TRX 4X4 350 that I haven't owned that long.I bought it non-running with no spark and I fixed that problem when I changed the stator.Since then I have been riding it all over for the last month or so,untill yesterday I was riding on a trail and it just quit.It kinda backfired once and stalled like someone pulled the plug.I tried to restart it with the electric start and it just whines like it isn't engaging and the kickstart seemes to kick very hard.I pulled the spark plug and kicked it over and it has good spark,so what is my problem?

Check to see if the compression release is working , there's a cable that connect's to the release lever on the engine head ; it should open the release lever when you push the electric start button or kick start the engine !

The compression release works automaticly on this model Honda and can cause these same symtem's you are having if the release cable is sticking , and i would also suggest checking your valve clearance ; my first quad was a 1986 Honda TRX350FM fulltime 4x4 and i had to adjust the valves 3 times in the 15 yrs that i owned it !

The compression release seems to be working when I kickstart it.The electric start isn't engaging so it isn't working with that.This lever is on the right side of the head when sitting on the quad?

Yes the compression lever is on the right side of the engine , and if it's working correctly it could be the starter or low voltage in the battery ; my 86' 350 was hard to start with the kick starter !

It had a little over 20 hrs. on the quad when i bought it from the original owner , and the electric starter was dragging shortly after i bought it ; the original owner thought the battery was weak from not riding it enough to keep the battery charged !

It was winter when i bought it and after a month i had to take it into the daelership for a rebuild kit for the starter , the dealer called to say that the armature was burntup and couldn't be rebuilt ; i had to replace it with a new one out of warranty and a new battery at almost $300 , needless to say that was the last time i let them work on my quad !

Check your battery first to see if it's charged and check the water level , if it's low fill it to the proper level with distilled water ; then give it a slow 2amp charge overnight !......

 

Just an update,I tore the stator side back apart and found that the flywheel bolt had come loose.Luckily nothing broke inside.I tightened the bolt back up and whacked it a bunch of times with a hammer on the rachet handle and put it back together and it fired right back up.Back when I changed the stator I took the bolt out to try and get the flywheel off to check things out.Must be I didn't tighten it back up....
