Default I have a few questions about a 1997 Honda Foreman.

Here are the questions:

1. Is 1000 miles alot on a Honda Foreman 400?

2. Are 1997's good for mudding if they have a snokel and bigger tires?

3. Is $2200 a good price if it runs and has quite a few upgrades?

4. Are they 4 wheel drive?

5. Do they have a speedometer?

6. Are they Manual, Automatic, or Semi-auto transmission?

7. How fast do they go?

Heres a link to the one I'm looking at...

Is that a good deal?

The Foreman 400 is a decent bike. They are 4x4, manual shift 5 speed with an auto clutch, speed? dont know 65-70 kph, has a regular dial type speedo, and are OK mudders with a snorkle and larger tires.

If I were you I'd go for a Foreman 450 (came out in 1998) for these reasons:

The 450 came with 12" rims, which all large tires use, the 400 came with 11" rims so to install larger tires you also need new 12" rims.

I think, but not 100% but the 450 appears to have more ground and tire clearnace stock to stock, I know my 450 can run 27" tires on stock everything else with no issues.

The 450 has more power

The 450 has a nice digital speedometer

The 400 is "pure utility"! It is a work quad, and not much of a trail quad.....

Back in that day, the front end had an "open" differential, which isn't a great thing.

Good solid high quality machines!

The only thing I can add-take away is that despite the difference in the 400 vs 450 size, the power difference is almost a non issue. Due to the gearing- they are almost dead even in power. I have a 2000 400 and I have 2 friends with 400's. I have 2 other friends with the 450's. They will all tell you the same thing as we have all swapped rides numerous times. So I would not choose the 450 JUST because you think it would give you more power. They are more advanced machines though. More bells and whistles with the digital dash.

I do think my 400 is actualy and nice trail machine. However, I spent years on a 300 2X4 and 4X4. My Foreman 400 rides like a cadillac compared to them.

By the way crusher44X. You asked if 1,000 miles was alot. NO I have over 10,000 on my 400. Its the one in my avatar.

trx300man, do you think I should get it? I dont really care about a fancy digital speedometer. Most cars dont even have digital. I could probly get the price down to $1800. How the suspension?

The one in your avatar looks like the one I'm thinking about getting.. And for the tire size, action450s, it comes with a lift and 12" rims and 27" tires.

I personally liked the look of the analog better than the digital all along, but that is just me. That is not a bad price at all if it is in good shape. Just check it over very very well it may have been used as a mudder before and sunk. Especially check the left rear wheel bearing, they go bad quite often. As far as the suspension goes, I personally think that they ride fairly well. From the different atv's I have rode, I feel they are one of the best riding straight axles out there. However, there are also alot of IRS suspensions nowadays, and nothing is anywhere near as smooth as they are.

If the rims are already swapped to 12" then thats a great investment you dont have to make. I'd go for it, the number of miles on it is a non issue. Pick up a repair manual and some basic hand tools and you will be able to do your own work. Brake maintenance, replaceing wheel bearings and fluid changes are the most common work with these ATV's, cheap, reliable and easy to work on.
