The machine has a hydrostat unit that provides infinate variable ratio in auto. It can emulate a geared transmission by letting you select between 5 preset ratios with the buttons.

Using it in auto mode won't effect it's longevity.

Have 03 and 06 rubi's and love both of them. Like Jeff said Keep it full of oil and keep your oil changed at the recommended or earlier intervals. Hydros are extremely durable if treated properly. The reason the hondamatic needs the 50hr or 500 mile chane is the shear the small engine does to the oil, since the engine an tranny oil are from the same source. I think if Honda would have seperated the engine and the tranny into seperate systems, you would even hear less of the failures. Their intetion is that if people service it like they should it will last a very long time and theres no seperate fluid and filter to have to change.

3000 miles one my 04 400AT and no problems. If you are doing heavy work with it or putting a strain on it use the ESP mode.

Most of the threads about problems with a hydrostat quad are an electrical problem or sensor.

Taking all the connectors apart and cleaning them up and packing with some diaelectric grease would probably be worthwhile to prevent little gremlins.

My dad's 03 Rubicon is having issues. It's slow to backshift/downshift.
It always been full of oil and changed at regular intervals.
Will call the dealer next week for help

It also should be mentioned that the right type of oil is being used, not some of the shelf motor oil. Should be be wet clutch compatible and non-energy conserving. Hey old crow are you in d2? when you downshift manually does it work faster? What type of oil you using? How many miles?

Probably the angle sensor or an electrical component, if all else feels right on the throttle. Also try low range to see if the shifting prob is there too.
