trx400fw
I recently bought at auction a 2000 trx400fw. A short history 300 hrs, 1135 mi, Was told they had key that was a no no. Had key made would not start cleaned carb finally was able to get running and idle good. would not shift to forward gears but ran excellent. Finally tried in reverse popped right in gear, but can not get it out of reverse so therefore can not even start and listen to it run now. I am figuring that the shift fork must be bent or broke. any suggestion would be appreciatted. Thanks Mr Enduro

All the “lengthways crankshaft” engines have a similar selector set up, including the electric shift models. I’ve just posted about the usual mechanical faults for Rowalker’s 350ES. Turn the fuel tap off, sit the bike on it’s backside, remove the front wheels, and all black plastics needed to get at the clutch housing. On some models you need to get the front prop shaft off, not sure about the old 400, if you do, take the front diff mounting bolts out, the diff can then be moved upwards far enough to get the prop shaft out. Once you get the clutch cover off, check the selector items I described for the 350ES.

OK if it is easier, here is the important bit. The pawl that moves the starwheel can crack, and springs out of the way when you try to change gear. Honda changed the design, so know about the fault but the later type still breaks, a female splined lever moves this pawl and I have known that to crack as well. They are in the clutch housing, but oil pipes are in the way and I rather think I had to remove the clutches to get at the pawl. The star wheel can also come loose so check that the setscrew, in the centre of it, is tight. I always Loctite the screw in if I have removed it.

I finally have had time to get back to my trx challanges done what you suggested and wow your suggestions worked like a professional advisor. The small shift spring has come unhooked from gear shift plate appears the hole for spring has broken off shift plate. Next question is can the centrifugal clutch be removed without a special tool or do i just bite the bullet and get one
