400EX Transmission Issue
Posted this in a Honda-specific forum with no response. Hopefully I can get some helpful info here....
I had to split the case on my non-reverse era 400EX to install a new crank. All went well, with the exception of the transmission, specifically the shift drum.
I tried following the Honda service manual, but the few pics they included did were grainy black & white, and they did not give much explanation to getting the shifter aligned with the drum correctly.
I got everything back together and took it on a test ride. 1st and 2nd shift fine, and most of the time 3rd was ok too. When I would go into 4th, sometimes it would go into neutral instead of 4th. I could downshift and try to upshift again, and occasionally I would get into 4th. Sometimes I would get a dead shift, where the shifter wouldnt want to click up at all.. I could downshift and then try to go up again to get it to work.
Before I break this thing down again, does anyone have better pics, or some advice as to getting the tranny back together correctly? How can I test it, so that I know things are aligned as they should be, BEFORE putting the top end and remaining lower end together?
