what's a good way to lock a 300 4x4 if you don't have anything around to lock it to? i've heard of locking the disc, or hubs or something, but doesn't look like any of that's an option for me.

clarification: locking as in "security".. sorry.

-thanks.

Brian,

If you are referring to "locking the front differential" - there is only one way to do that (that I'm aware of). That is to buy a "locked differential" from a place like Highlifter. Once this is installed - the front is always locked and cannot be unlocked.

Actually there is one other way: buy a Suzuki King quad which lets you lock and unlock the front diff.

In the April issue of ATVSport there's an article on security devices for quads. Tho most of them require something such as trees, trailers, etc to mount them, one called the Hitchin' Post does not. Basically, it's a 2 ft long screw, or auger that screws into the ground which the quad then is rolled over, and then the u-shaped lock is put over the axle or frame & locked to the post. In the test, a Honda Foreman was unable to pull out the post. It probably would not work well in sandy or rocky soil, however. It's portable & retails for $70. You can call them at 800-791-1333.The problem with locks on wheels or sprockets is that one or two healthy guys or gals could lift the locked end of the quad & wheel it off, with a minimum of noise or time.

Ahhhh, I believe I misunderstood what you were looking for. I saw the article on the quad lock as well - If you can get it in the ground - It would be a great way to prevent someone from "borrowing" your quad.
