Hey Guys,
Well I picked up my 84 Big Red and we have been riding and
cleaning this evening. The kids and I are taking all the green paint
off of the fenders and I will be doing a little touch up cleaning/
priming tommorrow... Over excited, I will be needing a new axle for
it some day, she wobbles pretty good and I can see signs of welding
near the wheels on both sides of the rear end... I mainly drive it in
high gear up to about 3rd gear with the kids on the back so I do not
think that will hurt it ....will it?
More Big Red News... I might have the chance to buy a 83 ATC200s
plus almost another whole one (in pieces etc) for around 500.00 the
bike that runs works great he said they replaced a head on it
recently and other then that it runs well... How does that price
sound to you experts...also what should I look for? Any Flaws in that
year etc????
I know knowsalot has some good tidbits for me ;-)
Thanks in advance!!!

You betcha!!
Glad you enjoy your new ride with the BigRed. Be careful with the kids on the back.
$500.00 is about the average price for these models no matter where you live. This price has stuck since the late 1980s. Seems like a fair price considering that you are getting a parts bike as well.
The topends of those engines are the same as your BigRed, so you never know when you may need more parts.
Like the BigRed, the entire machine is pretty reliable.
Lube and adjust the chain as neccessary. Keep a close eye for cracks along the lower frame rail under the engine on the right side. I have seen more than a few frames with cracks here. It will cause bad vibration and that part of the frame is sortof hidden making it a hassle to figure out if you don't know what to look for.
These models use a carburetor with a choke lever intergrated into it rather than by a manual cable like the BigRed. These carburetors have been discontinued by Honda. If you ever need a carburetor for the 200S, you will need to order one for the 200BigRed along with the choke cable and linkage to make it work. These are still readiliy available from Honda. [currently anyway]
Good luck in your shopping.

Not sure if you are interested, I see that you aren't really too far away from me (Northern Vermont).
There was a 200x in the paper last week for $450...said great shape, runs excellent. Sounded cheap.
My Uncle has one and I got to ride it for the first time the other night (he just got it going). That thing is a blast. I am almost considering getting one for myself.
Take care.

First off thanks Knowalot.... I hope you don't mind the questions because I am sure I will have more for you in the future... I am a disabled Airforce Vet....stay home Dad so I have lots of free time on my hands to tinker with things when I get a chance.. I appreciate you being on here. Thanks
Josh that sounds like an awesome deal , unfortunately I live almost 300 miles further North from the border of Maine so it would be a good haul for me to get down there... need to invest in a trailor some day. All the same I do thank you for letting me know! Nice to be informed and also to have a close neighbor.. Later Guys..
