Sounds like the spark is jumping to ground. Should probably just replace the part.

Welcome to the forum.. Any auto or cycle shop should have a 90 degree cap.http://www.ebay.com/itm/NGK-Universal-Spark-Plug-Cap-90-Degree-Elbow-14mm-Thread-LB05F-/271969967632?hash=item3f52ac5e10&vxp=mtr

Solenoid wouldn't have anything to do with it.Get the new cap check that you have good spark, plus I'd check compression. If you have at least 125 psi or so may just need to clean the carb and replace any worn parts.http://www.ebay.com/itm/CARB-REBUILD-REPAIR-KIT-POLARIS-XPLORER-400-4WD-1997-1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-/270463779773?hash=item3ef8e5c3bd&vxp=mtr Plus several videos on youtube on this style Mikuni carb.
