"95 Polaris 400, water pump caused engine damage.
I'm thinking about buying a '95 Polaris 400 4x4 for $300.
The owner says that the water pump sheared off and damaged the engine case. I know very little about these quads other than it's a 2-stroke, being that it's the 400 engine. Probably a scrambler model. My questions are, is this common? Are there 'problem solver' repair kits if it is common and does it sound like a reasonable asking price? Is this a bad idea? Should I avoid this? I'm very mechanically inclined. In fact I'm an ASE certified master tech ... on Automobiles and light trucks. Not 2-strokes or small engines for that matter. The pic posted is of the quad in question. I've never posted to a forum of any kind before so bare with me if my etiquette is off. Thanks in advance for any feed back.

Welcome to the forums. Just my two cents,I'd run,not walk away from this one. The water pump works off the counter balancer and if the water pump end is broken off a new counter balancer and they're not cheap.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Counter Balancer 350 400 Polaris Xplorer Scrambler Sport 3087042 | eBay Plus if the water pump was was damaged,no telling what else could be wrong. This smells like a money pit on an already complicate engine to work on.
