2510 mule fuel pump
I have a 2000 Mule 2510 that was given to me by a relative who bought a new 600 because it wasnt running. Installed new plugs and it gets great fire. Installed new fuel filter cause the old one looked original and was horrible looking. Tried jumping the electric fuel pump straight to my battery and it almost melted my jumper wires which tells me it has a short or is froze up??? I found a new pump for $139 at ATVWorks.com but was wondering if there was a way to use an aftermarket automotive in line pump which I can get for under $50. I know the mule pump is low pressure but was hoping to save some money.

I'm no expert, but I understand that the fuel level in the carburetor float bowl is critical to proper operation of the engine and that the correct level is maintained only when the fuel pump pressure matches the resistance of the float bowl inlet needle. When the float rises in the bowl, it causes the inlet needle to close down the flow of fuel into the bowl. If the fuel pump pressure is too high, the inlet needle won't be able to close down the flow of fuel into the bowl when it should. The result is an elevated float level and too much fuel being introduced into the engine. Unless I was sure that the pressure of the substitute pump exactly matched the pressure of the OEM pump, I wouldn't fool with it.

I have been working on mules for 10 years & it is common for this kind of fuel pump issue. It usally happens after a few years. The solution is to rewire the fuel pump power wire to a brown wire so the fuel pump goes when ever the key is turned on. The pump stops when it builds up to the shut off pressure. Once this is done you never have this problem again.
