On my 2004 Prairie 360 I am having a time with my fan fuse to keep blowing. I noticed it when it ran hot the other week while doing some landscaping in the yard. Does anyone know of a cause or common problem like this or maybe even some things to check?

What amp fuse does it keep blowing?

 

check the voltage going to the battery. If your voltage regulator isnt cutting it down enough or letting it spike it could blow fuses

 

its the 20 amp fuse that was originally in there

 

OK, that's the right amperage fuse.
Obviously some how the fan is drawing more than 20 Amp. There can be 2 possibilities:
> External dragging - see if there is any foreign objects or obstruction that would resist the rotation of the fan blades.
> Internal dragging - you can't really open up the fan motor housing. There can be corrosion inside that can cause dragging of the fan rotation as well.
The corrosion can also cause shorting of the motor ammature drawing excessive amount of current, blowing up the fuse.

Try to turn the fan blade by hand and see how much draggging/resistance you feel. It should be buttery smooth without any clicking noise.

If you can get a hold a ammeter, you can measure the actual amperage draw when fan is turning (like by directly connecting to 12VDC supply).

BTW, does the fan motor housing have a vent tube?

 

Another possibility is that the wiring may have rubbed through somewhere. Check the wiring harness that goes to the fan, the fuse & the switch. Look for any areas that it rubs against the frame or any other items.

 

Do you know if it was running hot even BEFORE the fan use blew?
If so, I am wondering if the fan was overworking.
And how did you determine or notice that it was running hot? I am asking this because P360 doesn't have a multi-function dash meter like on other bigger quads like 650 or 750 with the "Over Heat" warning light. ???

 

It never overheated until the fan didnt kick on. I found out it was overheating when the oil temp light came on. I think it is because the fan is not kicking on and keeping it cool. I have not checked to see if it has vent tube yet. Im gonna tear into it this weekend. The fan never did kick on before the fan blew the last few times. I also havent seen anywires that seem to be worn down as I have checked them all the way back to the fan motor

 

In that case, try to spin the fan by finger and it should turn like nothing. If you hear any noise or feel any dragging feeling, there could be internal problem inside the motor housing. On other bigger Kawi quads, there is a vent tube on the fan motor housing and that's the source of the contamination into the motor housing like when quad is used a submarine or when washing the unit and not being careful.

 

I took the fan off today and tried to play with the turning of it. It would not turn so I assume there is some internal damage. I am going to order a new one today
