One thing I always do when I get a new quad is fill the tank up and go on a long ride to see how far it goes before it starts sputtering as the gas bottoms out. I got 90 miles out of my tank (4.5 gallons on my Outlander Max XTP 650) before it started sputtering. So, I figure I can go about 80 miles safely in just about any condition. I haven't found a gauge on any machine that is really accurate. Of course, I tested it on a 122 mile round trip up in Northern Maine. Just as it ran out a couple of huge raindrops whacked down on the quad. Was able to get two gallons in and start our last 8 mile run back to the rental cabins when it opened up. Soaked again...

If you can swing it the flat packs from Rotopax.com are great gas cans. I've had mine for years and they're still standing up to the New England trails that are abusive on a quad.

I probably average 14-15 and have seen 17 - I think they like fuel.
Yep - a lot on steep hills.
