Question 08 outlaw ktm 525 issues!

Pulled the outlaw out this week. I drained the gas out of the tank and bowl before i put her up. Put in new gas started up fine was warming her up a little and pulled the battery cable off and it died. last year when i was riding it died on me a few times. Acted like i needed a new battery. I know with cars you pull the cables and it will stay running due to the alternator. In the case of my quad im not sure. Do i need a rectifier/regulater or stator. i know the stator can be costly.

Never pull a battery wire off while it's running. Can damage cdis, coils, etc. If the battery wasn't holding a charge before it could be a regulator problem or simply a dead cell in the battery that wouldn't let it hold a charge. First thing have a good battery in it and see if it cranks! If it does, check the charging rate at the battery while at an idle. Should be around 14 volts or so. If it just shows battery voltage (12 volts or so) possible needs a new regulator or could even be a stator problem. If you don't have a service manual best to get one. Lot of maintenance on this machine to keep up with. Here's one for 5 bucks.2008 Polaris Outlaw 525 IRS Service Manual PDF Download

i put a good battery on it and it didn't want to start up but i put the old battery on(that had not been on a charger in at least two months) it started right up even road it around the block a few times. but im going to get the rectifier looked at just because. I'm hoping it's not the stater$$$$$

Now that you have it running, just check voltage at the battery with a meter. Should show at least 14 volts back to the battery while it's idling. If it's not, then could be a regulator in most cases, but yes it could be a stator problem also. That's why the 5 buck manual link I posted might help.
