Default stator swap

Junk man came buy and was going to scrap a little taotao110 but thought I might want to try and fix it. ATV is in great shape, brake even works. but the chain had pooped up,busted up the chain cover and timing cover pretty bad. Neither were usable. I took the timing cover off and I have a few extra ones laying here but none looked the same inside as this one. I put one on and worked on it and I can get it to turn over with the button but I am not getting any spark at the plug. I changed out the coil with one from a running atv and still nothing.
does the stator have to look the same for this to work?
