I just installed an ADA Coolhead w/20cc domes on my 2000 Banshee. I was wondering if it would be ok to use premium 92 octane pump gas with say an octane booster to increase the octane for the compression. And also will I need to rejet for this mod. the guys told me I didn't have to rejet but I am unsure. THANX.
increasing your compression usually calls for an increase in your main jet. Im not at your altitude, but i had to go up 3 sizes on my main when I installed a coolhead. buy some extras and have them on hand. it never hurts and they arent that expensive. they told me i wouldnt have to rejet either. white plugs told me different.
from my understanding, there really isnt a need to run a higher octane unless you exceed 150 lbs of compression. I run 140 lbs with 21 cc domes at 4500 ft. you might be higher with the smaller domes and your altitude. buy a tester and check it and see. they arent that expensive.
I had the same question several months ago after seeing that VP was selling a high end octane booster at local auto part stores in the metro-Phoenix area. I thought adding VP octane booster to premium pump gas would not only be cheaper, but more economical to obtain.
Just to be safe, I called VP (in Houston,TX) and asked them if adding their octane booster to pump gas is the same as race gas. They made it perfectly clear, "No; it is not the same." In fact, the chemist I spoke to at VP said a two-stroke engine receives little, if any, benefit of an aftermarket octane booster. Keep in mind I was talking about using VP octane booster and they still said "No." He simply told me the chemistry and composition of race gas is completely different than pump gas mixed with octane booster and that the booster really isn't effective in a two stroke machine.
I have 165 pds compression, coolhead with 18cc domes, ported/polished, wiseco pistons, etc. and run race gas only! Never had a problem.
I'm going with the VP chemist and staying away from the octane booster, however it sounds like it would be great idea if it worked!
Octane boost doesn't really raise the octane of the fuel, it typically just adds lead, which acts as a coolant and lubricant (which is kinda the same effect as a higher octane fuel).
I've run octane boost in a pinch (on my dual-sport motorcycle) when there's no good fuel around. It reduces detonation to a manageable level in some cases, but not as much as even 2 more octane would normally do(using 89 octane fuel with octane boost would probably compare to 90 octane).
Given the choice, I'll go with the good stuff every time!!!
