Ok on 04 sportsnan 700 efi , the black box on side of transmission that the the shifter linkage goes to , mine broke inside and won't shift gears now ! I had to take the black cover off so I could put it in gear while out in the woods today , what is that part called ?

 

It's what I call the "pre" transmission gear case cover. Has several shift gears,a detent lever that are packed with grease from the factory.These gears turn the internal shift drum and shift forks.Over time water entry can wash the grease away,gears can rust up and make shifting hard.Item #3 on the parts breakdown.Dirt Cheap Yamaha, Polaris, Suzuki & Kawasaki OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse Here's some pics from someone on the other forum that that repaired his gear box.Hard to Shift 700 Sportsman 2004 - Polaris ATV Forum OR possibly you're talking about the gear position switch that's broken. Item #69 on the same parts breaks down list..

 

So does the gears and detent lever all come as a assembly with the cover ? I'm assuming they do but I'd like to know for sure before I go ordering parts. Thanks again OPT for your help!!

 

NO this is not an assy. The cover,and parts inside are sold separately. Look at the parts break down list.Plus look close at the pics on the post I linked to.You should be able to determine what parts you may need once you clean this area. May not need anything but cleaning and greasing.

 

I need everything that's inside the box ! The gears all fell out and got left on the trail ! Lol

 

At least every thing will be new.. Should shift like a brand new machine.
