Default Shifting Problems with new Sportsman 400 Hunters edition

Hey I just unloaded my son's new 04 Sportsman Huntiers Edtion 400 and I couldn't get it in high. I have a 98 500 and figured the shifting was the same but it wasn't. Please advise on what I was doing wrong. Oh and I thought it would be a little smaller than my 98 with a lift and larger tires but it wasn't. I'm going to have to explain that one to the wife. Oh well we own it now.

You have to press the foot brake to get the new bikes into High and Reverse. If you're doing this and it still isn't working, make sure the spring btw. the foot brake and the tranny gear sensor is still connected. Sometimes the spring ends aren't bent 100% and they come loose.

yes, Enganear is right. you must press the foot brake to put it in HIGH and to return it to PARK you need to press the brake.

i guess your dealer didn't show you the basics or give you the mandatory safety course. be sure to put that in your survey from Polaris.

i hope they took the time to properly PDI the ATV. however i doubt it. if they didn't take the time to do the other vitally important things.

check the torque on those lug nuts and have your son watch the safety video BEFORE riding.

GOOD LUCK!

That's correct. I mistakening said High and Reverse in my original post, I meant to say High and Park. Sorry about that!

I don't have any pics of it, and I'm in the process of selling the bike. I could have taken some pics if you would have asked last week! :-) It was pretty easy to do though...

For the dual batteries, I have the standard 12AH battery and a 30AH battery that comes on the 600 & 700's. I removed the drybox under the seat and mounted the 30AH battery there btw. the frame. It fits perfect in the standard twin battery box and mounts using existing holes in the frame.

As for the dual winches, the front one is mounted normal and the rear one is mounted in front of the brake light. I cut up the mounting plate that comes w/ the winch to fit on the rear part of the frame and between the vertical rear rack supports. Then I just bolted the cut mounting plate to the frame using the existing bolt holes. Its tight, but it fits nicely between the plastic and the rack supports. I had to remove the stock brake light and trim about 1 1/2 inches of plastic. I also used a piece of sheet metal to mount a new brake light to and mounted it just under the winch. I have a DPDT switch mouted to the headlight pod that determines which winch is controlled by the rocker switch. It all works great and was pretty easy to do.

I hope to have the same setup on a new 800EFI in a few months, so I'll be sure to take some pics and post 'em...
